The By Farr winery, based in the Moorabool Valley near Geelong in Victoria, is a winery steeped in Australian wine folklore. It was founded by Gary Farr in 1994. Farr at the time was one of the leading lights in Australian cool climate winemaking, long before it became fashionable. His work at Bannockburn Vineyards in Geelong, making what were some of the best and most Burgundian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the country at the time, schooled many local winemakers on how to coax the best from these grape varieties. But over time Farr moved away from Bannockburn Vineyards and set up his By Farr vineyard next door continuing the tradition for fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with exceptional Shiraz and Viognier also thrown in the mix.

By Farr’s location on the South Western corner of Port Phillip Bay in Geelong, close as the crow flies to the Mornington Peninsula and the Yarra Valley, makes surprisingly different wines to its near neighbours with a distinct savoury edge. This has always given the By Farr wines an additional layer of complexity over many other Southern Victorian wineries.

Today By Farr is run by Gary Farr’s son Nick who continues the family tradition for high quality, with the wineries regularly scored as some of the country’s best. By Farr has also extended past the original vineyards planted in 1994 exploring different areas of the original property and two new sites, purchased in 1998 and 2011, including with Gamay. The top range are the By Farr wines with Farr Rising made from younger and lesser plantings.

The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay remain this wineries greatest wines - classically Burgundian in character radiating with savoury complexity on top of bright and pure fruit. These are wines that generally need some time in a cellar to show their best.
