Since Geoff Merrill’s first vintage in 1980, the Merrill name on a bottle of wine has been a guarantee of quality. From his winery in McLaren Vale Geoff has over almost four decades created classic South Australian wines styles - generous, full-bodied red wines stacked full of flavour and big, oaky Chardonnay. For a time Geoff was one of our largest family-owned exporters with his name seen in supermarkets across Europe and the United States. Today though Geoff is much happier making smaller volumes of quality wine that always overdeliver.

Geoff Merrill’s winery in located on Pimpala Road in the Northern end of McLaren Vale. For many years it was surrounded by vineyards but today as Adelaide has expanded it is ringed by homes. But still every year at vintage time trucks loaded up with fruit travel down suburban roads before depositing their load at his winery. There is still a small vineyard on Geoff’s property next to the winery that is the source of his Pimpala Road range.

Geoff Merril’s wine style is unashamedly old-fashioned. You won’t find any meek, elegant wines here - Merrill is the home to big and bold reds and whites, usually given a generous oak treatment with significant time in barrel. Big, rich, buttery Chardonnay laced with vanilla-scented oak and generous, almost dense Shiraz are two styles in particular that Geoff is well known for.

That time in barrel is one of Geoff’s hallmarks which provides great oak integration with powerful fruit but also exceptional complexity that only long barrel aging can. That oak, and the tannins they provide also make Geoff’s reds in particular well suited to cellaring over the medium to long term. If you love big old fashioned whites and reds then look no further than Geoff Merrill wines.
