  • Benromach is a small distillery that finds it home in Forres, in the Speyside region of the Scottish Highlands. It's owned by the brilliant independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, who resurrected the run-down and defunct distillery in 1993. 11 years of renovation later, the distillery began bottling again in 2004.

Today, the whisky produced at Benromach is truly hand-crafted. Nothing is left to chance, or technology, as each step of the distillation process is overseen and carefully managed in the old, traditional ways - sight, touch and taste. It takes a little longer, but you just can't rush quality. Each year, a batch of heavily peated spirit is produced at Benromach, and then tucked away to mature in ex-bourbon barrels.

This particular expression was distilled in 2008, and peated to 67 PPM (phenol parts per million). At these levels, it's quite a smoky dram - think Laphroaig or Ardbeg, for a comparison. Bottled in 2017 at 9 years of age.

  • WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

A bonfire after rain. Cured meats on a wooden board. A bowl of stone fruit and citrus. The nose of this whisky is beautifully complex and layered. On a second pass, notes of sweet vanilla and honey emerge, with a subtle tobacco note. The palate is intense with cracked pepper, citrus rind, sweet licorice, and a thick, ashen background. There's a touch of barley maltiness too, that serves to balance and tame the barrel of peat smoke. Finishing dry and herbaceous, this is a dram for any lover of richly peated styles.
