  • Iconic Priorat at a price that cannot be beat.

Mas Doix are one of the most remarkable estates in Priorat, and this is their most oldest and cherished release. The countryside in Priorat is unlike anything you've ever seen before. It is an ancient Spanish landscape, lunar like, with steep terraces climbing the mountain sides, and licorella soils and rock shards strewn across the place. Perfect for growing, and perfect for the ancient 100 year old vines that make up the Mas Doix. Sourced directly from the importer, and stored in climate control, this is a chance to secure Spanish royalty for 70% off the local retail price.

Old vines aren’t worth a farthing unless they are planted in the right place – luckily the Doix vineyard is just such a site. This is the oldest vineyard at Mas Doix, a steep, natural amphitheater that starts at 350m above sea level before topping off at 500m. The oldest vines of Carinyena were planted here, in the fractured llicorella soils, starting in 1902, followed by some terribly youthful (by comparison!) 80 year-old Garnatxa. The wines from this site are concentrated but quite balanced – showing the hallmark acidity and minerality characteristic of all of the wines from this address.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Doix estate vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "licorella". The grapes come from vines between 80 and 105 years old, with a small but exceptional average production of 400 gr per vine.

Great vintage 2008 for the area. It started with a very cool and dry dry winter. In March, very low nigth temperatures delayed the outbreak a few weeks. Rain arrived in May with 150 ml. Very dry July and August allowed an optimum fruit ripening. A fresh September with no water extended a slow and balance ripening until Harvest in October.

The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 4/5 weeks what allowed a progressive and excellent extraction. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.

    Varieties - 48% Grenache, 50% Carignan,2 % Merlot

'The 2008 DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles reveals a deep purple color with outstanding aromatic complexity. Notes of liquid minerality, licorice, lavender, Asian spices, and black cherry lead to a supple, savory effort loaded with spice and personality. There is a nicely concealed structure that will allow the wine to evolve for several years although it is approachable now. It will be best from 2013 to 2028.'

'Mas Doix has a story quite common in Priorat in which professional people living in the big cities return to reclaim the family heritage (and are having more fun than they ever did before). Mas Doix’s flagship cuvee is named DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles with an annual production of only 4-7,000 bottles. It is typically a blend of old-vine Garnacha and Carinena (80-108 years of age) with the proportions varying slightly from year to year. The wine is aged in 100% new French oak for 14-18 months.'

'Bright ruby. A pungent, highly aromatic bouquet evokes blackberry, cherry-cola, incense and violet. Ripe and muscular but surprisingly lithe, offering sappy red and dark berry flavors complicated by licorice and candied flowers. Slow to open but extremely promising, finishing with serious power and length.'

'The estate's oldest Carignan goes into this wine, a large proportion originally planted in 1902. The blend is 55% Carignan, 45% Grenache. The wine is aged in 100% new French oak for 16-18 months. So clear, clean and polished, as smart and suave as it gets. Bright red purple colour, really lively with a balancing ripness, vivid flavours of bullace, sloe, salt, dark chocolate and red cherry, it may be aged in 100% new oak but you can't taste it. Powerful but ultra smooth, a distinctly fresher style of Priorat than most. An excellent wine, a gentleman's Priorat.'
