'Here an ocean of full-bodied black fruits has tides of tannins and quality oak all playing off and enhancing each other on the prodigiously long palate.'

  • The best wine of each vintage & one of the world's great Shiraz.

The story of Stonewell Shiraz began in 1987 when Peter Lehmann decided to make a special Shiraz - a wine of immense intensity and muscularity that would demand time in the barrel and bottle before release. The wine was named ‘Stonewell’ after the district that he believed best showed the characters admired most in Barossa Shiraz.

This tradition has continued and each vintage the best Shiraz fruit from our extensive network of growers is chosen to create Stonewell. Usually no more than a dozen small, old vineyards are selected each year, the oldest planted in 1885. The berries are small and sparse with crops typically less than 1.5 tonnes per acre.

The pedigree of these vineyards and the knowledge that has been passed from each grape growing generation to the next assures us that Stonewell Shiraz is a wine of great longevity that can be cellared with confidence for many years to come.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Vintage - The 2012 vintage came early and was low yielding. The weather was quite mild throughout and the quality is outstanding - the fruit was beautifully balanced with great colour and varietal definition.

Vineyards - Three of our premium low-yielding vineyards met the Stonewell standard to be included into this vintage. All three vineyards, Obbietivo, Carey and Simar are located in the southern part of the Barossa.

Winemaking - Fermented on skins in static fermenters for two weeks prior to pressing through a small batch basket press. Following clarification the wine was aged in French oak hogsheads for 12 months prior to bottling and further ageing in our cellars until its release.

    TASTING NOTES

This limited release Stonewell shows a deep, black centre with dark, plummy fruit and a touch of chocolate and aniseed on the nose. The palate is richly structured with fine tannins and a long persistent finish. This wine shows distinct flavours of black fruits, dark plums, licorice and dark chocolate with hints of black pepper. This wine will cellar beautifully for the next 20 plus years.

Enjoy - Savour with rich game dishes, roast beef, and cheese such as parmigiano reggiano, aged cheddar or Grana Padano.

    Alc/vol - 14.5%

  • REVIEWS

'Has retained exceptional deep crimson-purple colour; as the time perspective increases, so does the stature of the '12 vintage, and its longevity. Here an ocean of full-bodied black fruits has tides of tannins and quality oak all playing off and enhancing each other on the prodigiously long palate.'

'Sumptuous, palate-staining and concentrated, with balance and complexity.'
    96 Points - Jeremy Oliver

'Peter Lehmann's flagship Shiraz is a mouth-filling treat with plum, blackberry, cassis and spicy oak flavours. Dense, sweet fruit is perfectly balanced by fine, ripe tannins to give a pleasantly drying finish and plenty of cellaring potential. A serious red that thoroughly deserves its exalted status.'
    96 Points - Bob Campbell

'Stonewell is the top tier wine from Peter Lehmann and it matures in French oak for 15 months – the fruit comes from varied vineyard sites, but is, allegedly, sorted for best fruit appropriate to this wine. A stalwart of Australian fine wine.
Took a while to reveal a better version of the wine but it certainly has charm from the start. Strong scent of dark roast coffee beans, sauna wood, black currants, sweet clove spice and Indian ink. It’s oaky in perfume, but not in an astringent way; feels welcoming. The palate is surprisingly tight and in a way a touch unfriendly, comparatively. Lavish dark berry fruit is a feature with pleasing concentration. The wine is full in sinewy tannin, and there is a grittiness to texture that finishes in mocha powder pucker and a lick of lemony bitterness. Structure wise, it should cellar well, but fruit is hidden under oak and tannin presently. Missing some of the come hither character 2012 provided, perhaps.'

'Aromas of blackberries, blueberries and spices follow through to a full body, round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink now.'

'Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Stonewell Shiraz offers aromas of cassis, mulberries and warm plums with suggestions of dried mint, dark chocolate and violets. Full-bodied, rich and solidly built with firm, grainy tannins and a lively backbone, it delivers plenty of classic Barossa flavors and a good, long finish.'
