Here's something you don't see every day - a 97 point scoring, double
gold medal-winning Serafino McLaren Vale Syrah that has been ageing for
eight years in the cellar.
Eight years! Most current release Shiraz is 2017 and 2018, not a beautifully mature 2012. Serafino deliberately keep back their top-shelf wine, and it makes for much more interesting wine.
Sourced from a single vineyard on the western side of the McLaren Vale township, part of the secret is the clever winemaking, with a long post-ferment maceration (the wine is kept on skins after fermentation) to encourage more complexity.
It's rare to see both Huon Hooke and James Halliday agree on a wine, but they did here, with Hooke praising it as a 'superbly generous, opulent wine with masses of flavour and tannin'.

The grapes for Terremoto were destemmed leaving a high proportion of whole berries in the must, cold soaked for 2 days and inoculated with a yeast culture . The wine was fermented in a 4 tonne open fermenter for 8 days. During that time, the wine was pumped over twice a day. The wine remained on skins for a further 10 days before pressing to 300L oak barrels
Terremoto Syrah captures the essence of McLaren Vale. The wine is fruit driven, bursting with rich dark fruit characters of blackberries, mulberries and blueberries while being balanced with tight fine grain tannins. The wine is fresh with textures and layers of flavour. The generosity of fruit and the seamless integration of oak and tannin ensures the mouthfeel is vibrant, long and elegant.
The Serafino story began in 1964 when Steve (Serafino) Maglieri arrived in Australia from Italy as a passionate teenager full of dreams. Two years later, with the assistance of his father Giovanni, he planted his first vines in McLaren Vale that now extends to 350 acres, laying the foundation of a winemaking dynasty that today is known as Serafino Wines and overseen by his daughter, Maria. From the beginning, Steve and his father worked from dawn to dusk seven days a week to produce wines of such outstanding quality that it wasn’t long before the accolades began to flow.

Hosanna, a producer using a screwcap on its best wine, quality one-piece cork on its second best. A beautifully balanced syrah, which caresses the mouth with deceptive power - no sledgehammer here, just shiraz of remarkable purity to its blue and black fruits, supported by some oak and supple tannins.
Deep, rich red colour with brick and purple tinges, while the bouquet is rich and ripe and vanillan, smoky and chocolaty. Strong oak infusion, but it's not oaky. The palate is full-bodied, powerful, concentrated and vibrant, with good acidity backing firm ample tannins. The wine is fleshy and dense, lush and robust. A superbly generous, opulent wine with masses of flavour and tannin. Long term.

Bonox and meat, splintery oak, tobacco, rich dried fruit character, mature feel to this wine but not without character. Thick set in the palate, rolls with dark fruit, coffee-mocha character, more meatiness, Chinese five spice. Finishes long and with burr of powdery tannin. Good feel for a maturing, richer wine style.
