'The tannins are fine and silky, the medium-bodied palate very long, new French oak lurking in the background.'
96 Points - James Halliday

  • Grown on Adam's (The AT behind AT Richardson) home vineyard in the Great Western sub-region of the Grampians, the Hard Hill Road wines are made only in years of excellent fruit, and display the subtle majesty of his vineyard. Old vines, low-intervention winemaking techniques, low-fertility soils, brisk winds, and cool ripening conditions conspire to produce a wine of wonderful intensity and balance.

Grown on our Hard Hill Road vineyard in Great Western, these Shiraz grapes were vinified in small batches and fermented as whole berries and whole bunches. We hand-plunge the fermentations only twice per day, and once the fermentation is complete the wine sits on its skins for about a month before gentle pressing in a small hand-operated basket. The wine then rests in French and American 500L puncheons for 18 months.

    Harvested in April
Cellaring Potential of 20 years +
    Alcohol – 14.5%
    Total Acidity – 6.5 g/L
    pH – 3.45

The Hard Hill Road Shiraz typically displays aromas on an intense and tightly woven fabric of blackberry, liquorice, dark chocolate and black pepper that flow onto the palate.

Secondary notes of tar, gunsmoke and cured meats add an element of the exotic, and sit comfortably atop a fine tannin backbone. The underlying structure is refined and complex, providing for a long and evolved finish.

'When tasting Chockstone Shiraz you wonder what Hard Hill Road could possibly bring to the table that isn't already there; the answer is the unexpected elegance, and the glimmer of red fruit of this wine; the tannins are fine and silky, the medium-bodied palate very long, new French oak lurking in the background.'
    96 Points - James Halliday

'Deep red colour with a good rim of purple. The wine is very full-bodied and powerful, driving and muscular, with massive structure and grip. There's more ironstone, pepper and spice than in the '12. A chain-mail glove with a velvet interior! The 50% new French oak doesn't show. A wine for the long-term.'
    95 Points - Huon Hooke
