  • Originally established in the 1860s by one of Melbourne's founding fathers, James Johnston, Craiglee Vineyard was absent from the Australian wine landscape until it was replanted in 1976 by an enthusiastic agricultural science graduate called Pat Carmody.

Now one of Australia's most highly regarded and awarded wineries, Craiglee is still run with the loving attention of Pat and Dianne Carmody with the occasional input of their sons.

This wine is highly aromatic with rhubarb, blueberry, raspberry and violets on the nose. The palate is savoury with persistent blackberry flavours plus a load of pepper and spices, then a wave of fine tannins to complete the picture. Oak, fruit and acidity are in perfect balance in an expressive and stylish wine.

'Violet, blackberry, five spice, tobacco and subtle oak. Medium bodied, but plenty of flesh and ripeness, layers of spice, a beautiful mouth-perfume mingling with savoury earthiness, and powder fine tannin running on a long finish. All just so. Wonderful expression of Shiraz from a distinguished site.'

'Composed. Keeping it all close to its chest for now. Dark cherries, roasted meats, black pepper and smoky oak; beautifully integrated and teamed. Lift of redder berries, inching into florals. Tannin has the whip held aloft, ready to crack. Everything in perfect order.'

'Very reserved and restrained, this youthful Shiraz should build considerable depth and perfume. Scented with dusty, floral and faintly peppery aromas of small black and blue berries knit with gentle cedary oak, it’s long and supple. Already showing a light meaty, savoury aspect, its lively presence of small berries and dark plums is supported by a firmish but pliant spine and finishes with a bright acidity. All it needs is time.'
