  • Fighting Gully Road is one of those smaller producers that we absolutely love. Minimal interventionist winemaking, using premium fruit, and site specific vineyards with distinct soil types and terroir. What's not to love?

Vigneron Mark Walpole bought the FGR site in 1995, and spent 2 years cleaning it of scrub, old tree stumps and rabbits! The first vines were planted in 1997 to Cabernet and Merlot, with Pinot Noir the following year.

From these early years, Mark has expanded his plantings to include several Mediterranean varieties such as Sangiovese, Aglianico and Tempranillo, and has incorporated the Smith Vineyard (the oldest vineyard in Beechworth, planted 1978), which he has leased since 2009.

The 2013 Tempranillo is a stunning wine. Complex and detailed, it clearly references the wines of Rioja, but without the boorish American oak that can often accompany them. Savoury and balanced, with texture and elegance, this is one you won't want to miss.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

100% Tempranillo. The palate structure demonstrates the varietal difference between Tempranillo and other red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Firm, fine grained powdery tannins coat the mouth, with rich black fruits. Released as a four year old wine, it demonstrates many of the characteristics seen in the Tempranillo wines of Spains Rioja Alta and Ribera del Duero. Matured in French oak (50% new) for 18 months.

    TASTING NOTES

Aromas of lovely, cedary oak, perfumed red fruits, cured meats and a subtle dill pickle note. A wonderfully rich and savoury palate with sour cherry fruits, powdery tannins and lots of spice on the finish. Outstanding.

'Hand-picked and sorted, destemmed, lightly crushed, wild open ferment, 28 days on skins, matured in French oak (50% new) for 18 months. The spicy, cherry fragrance of the bouquet leads as straight as an arrow to the medium-bodied palate. The Rolls Royce treatment with 50% new French oak from the Bertranges forest was perfect.'
