  • Certain names resonate strongly within the halls of Australian wine history. Jim Barry is one such name. It was Jim Barry’s drive and community spirit that helped shape South Australia’s Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world class Riesling and cemented its place as one of Australia’s premier wine regions.

A challenging vintage for the vineyard with an extremely dry growing and ripening season favouring smaller and open canopies. The upside is that the fruit displayed very small and open bunches with good exposure allowing the development of intense flavour and colour. Careful selection of only healthy fruit with no shrivel at harvest produced a wine with dense ripe purple fruits and very fine elegant tannins.

This wine is a deep crimson red in the glass. Intensely aromatic with a mix of dark vine fruits, dark chocolate, fresh garden herbs, cedar oak and a touch of earth. The palate is flooded with generous dark berry flavours with savoury notes of earth, clove and cedar. Very fine, mineralic tannin lends length and style to a wine of great presence and persistence. The Benbournie has been created with the Jim Barry philosophy to be enjoyed upon release after a period of long term cellaring (under correct conditions) to enhance the wine’s qualities.

'Here’s a seductive and rich chocolaty wine layered with peppermint and baking spices, and ripe black fruit. Tannin is fat and well massaged, the acidity nicely bedded down, and the finish is long, deep and seasoned with sage and spice, and perhaps some tobacco and more savoury stuff. It’s very good.'

'Deep, dark red colour with few purple reflections, the bouquet rather oaky - chocolate accented - while the palate is rich and fleshy, intense and firm. It's a big wine but surprisingly elegant, with balance and attractive flavours, finishing with serious Clare Valley tannins. Very smart wine.'

'The colour is fabulous - a seductive garnet-purple; aromas of coffee grounds, cassis and kirsch, plenty of weight and richness, oak playing a role with the structure too. There's a flourish of sweetness with the tannin raspy and a little drying on the finish.'
