  • THE BRIEF
  • Katnook is one of the oldest and most acclaimed producers of fine Coonawarra wine. With a history dating back to 1896, it has estate vineyards in the heart of the famed soils on the Riddoch highway. Winemaker, Wayne Stehbens, made every single vintage of Katnook up until his passing in 2017; a remarkable achievement.

This year, Katnook Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon celebrates its twentieth anniversary with the release of the 2013 vintage.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Coonawarra's 2013 vintage was earlier than usual and noted for its warmer than average temperatures and below average rainfall, especially throughout the later stages of the growing season. Warm and dry conditions leading up to harvest, produced Cabernet Sauvignon fruit in exceptional condition. Odyssey is created from small parcels of premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from our oldest terra rossa vineyards and selected for their richness and intense flavours.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Intricate layers of concentrated fruit and oak. Rich dark berry, mulberry and plum fruits with hints of mocha and vanilla are complemented by assertive fine-grained tannins and balanced oak maturation characters.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Katnook was the site of wine pioneer John Riddoch’s first commercial Coonawarra vintage in 1896. In 1980, the second chapter began when wine was again crafted in Riddoch’s original winery by Wayne Stehbens. He was one of the longest serving winemakers in Australia. Wayne was responsible for a string of remarkable achievements such as twice winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy, as well as a double trophy at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2003. Accomplished winemaker, Tim Heath, assumed the role of Senior Winemaker in June 2018. Set in the centre of Coonawarra’s grape growing district, a short distance from the town of Penola, Katnook occupies vineyard sites on the famed Terra Rossa strip of the region. Katnook aims to make wines which show subtlety, intrigue and complexity. Reflecting the essence of Coonawarra’s terroir is integral to Katnook's winemaking approach. Cabernet Sauvignon is the undoubted hero of the Coonawarra region, however other red varietals such as Shiraz and Merlot are equally impressive.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Machine-harvested, crushed and destemmed, fermented in a mix of open and closed fermenters, 5-10 days on skins, matured for 36 months in French (56% new) and used American oak. Obviously, oak leaves a footprint on the wine, but there is a wealth of blackcurrant/cassis, bay leaf and spice to provide balance to a warm hearted, generous wine that can be enjoyed now or in 20+ years. A enduring part of the Coonawarra landscape since its first vintage in '91. '

GARY WALSH - THE WINE FRONT

Name puts me in mind of the Honda people-mover. Anyway, this wine sure is roomy.Rich black fruit, lavish mocha and coconut oak, a whiff of peppermint. Full-bodied, deep and packed with flavour, grainy tannin, glimmers of red fruit, dark chocolate, sage and toasty oak. Acidity has a slight sourness, but all up finds balance despite its scale and heft. Finish is savoury, toasty and long. '
