  • WHO MADE IT?
  • O'Leary Walker Wines was established in 2000 by winemakers David O'Leary and Nick Walker. With over twenty five years experience and established reputations making premium wine with the big companies, these two long time friends decided to take control of their own destiny and craft small batches of wine from some of the best vineyard sites in South Australia. With a great leap of faith they are now doing exactly what they set out to. Based in Leasingham in the Clare Valley, the duo source fruit from all over South Australia (including the Barossa, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale) but some of the best fruit comes from the Clare Valley itself. Of particular note is the Grace's vineyard in Watervale which supplies Riesling for the lauded 'Watervale Riesling' label. Grace's is a dry grown, west facing vineyard that sits on the classic 'red loam over limestone' Watervale soils and produces wonderful Riesling fruit. Similarly, the Smith and Molloy vineyards in the Polish Hill River area also contribute wonderfully intense Riesling fruit of the highest order. The O'Leary Walker range focuses on some premium regional varietals, taking the best bits from all around South Australia. The theory behind this is to draw on the grape varieties that excel in these quite different viticultural climates.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

From Martin and Joan Smith's 123yo dry grown vineyard in Polish Hill River, NASAA organic certified since '12. Destemmed, wild-fermented, hand-plunged four times daily, 15 days on skins, matured in French oak for 30 months. A wonderfully sumptuous and supple wine, its bouquet and palate a treasure trove of blackberry, red and black cherry, spice, cedar and chocolate; fine-grained tannins provide support, as does the French oak. Once you've got a glass in your hand, you're not likely to put it down.

DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS 2018 - GOLD

Blackberry and blackcurrant alongside chocolate, cocoa and a touch of coffee on the nose. The palate is really complex with leather, baking spice and dried autumnal fruit characters. A big ripe style, wearing the alcohol well. In conclusion, it is simply very impressive.

BOB CAMPBELL MW - THE REAL REVIEW

Flagship shiraz with rich, savoury characters adding extra interest to plum, berry and spice flavours. Big dense wine with appealing sweet fruit and layers of different flavours. An impressive wine that makes a strong statement

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Deep, dense red with tinges of brick as well as purple, the bouquet very chocolaty and toasty and heavily oak-infused. The palate is big and opulent with lavish fruit-sweetness and oak influences. There is fresh acidity which refreshes the big, weighty palate. It's very full-bodied, dense and chewy, with a generous core of sweet fruit. A big flavoured wine that will appeal most to those who like oaky reds.

TONI PATERSON MW - THE REAL REVIEW

This wine has been built for the long-term though it is still an infant right now. Concentrated fruit with green flecks, high acidity and bold tannin. Tart plum flavours. Needs time

DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS 2016 - BRONZE

Intoxicating and heady aromas of baked fruit and jammy bramble, while the palate is brimming with sweet, dark fruit and a lovely herbal thread.
