  • THE BRIEF
  • The 'crown jewel' in Quartz Reef's sparkling collection; this exquisite wine exudes style and finesse. The wine is from Quartz Reef's BioGro certified organic and Demeter certified biodynamic estate vineyard located in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago. The vineyard was planted in 1998 after careful site selection.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • The 2013 season was the quickest harvest ever for the winery with all grapes being picked within one week. This gave good uniformity to the grapes, which were extremely healthy when picked. Most importantly, the quality of the fruit was high. We experienced hot, dry and settled weather throughout the summer which allowed for extended ripening and full aromatic expression with great concentration; the perfect combination for our 2013 Blanc de Blancs Vintage.

The grapes were hand-picked in ideal condition on the 20th March 2013. A selected blend of 91% Chardonnay and 9% Pinot Noir. Bottle fermented and aged 56 months on lees. Riddled and disgorged by hand from Winter 2018.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Refreshing citrus notes with an irresistible aroma of a pÂtisserie. Tantalizing lime and chamomile with precise acidity that dances on the palate. Fine persistent bubbles will capture and engage your senses. An exceptional example of world class Méthode Traditionnelle.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • It is now well established that Central Otago produces outstanding Pinot Noir and Quartz Reef is no exception. Firm and intense with notes of ripe black cherry, pomegranate and spice, the maturing sun drenched slopes of our Bendigo Estate vineyard continues to produce Pinot Noir of exceptional expression and structure. The Quartz Reef Pinot Gris is made in a rich bone dry style which compliments foods of all flavours. Quartz Reef Methode Traditionnelle is a wine of distinction, made in the traditional method to achieve elegance and finesse. Focused, fresh and crisp with a beautiful balance and length. Easily New Zealand's most Champagne-like Sparkling Wine.

    BOB CAMPBELL MW

Delicious Methode made from 100% chardonnay and with plenty of biscuit and brioche yeast lees flavour indicating plenty of time en tirage. This really is a terrific wine - quite robust and flavoursome for a Blanc de Blancs, with a lengthy finish and a moderately silken texture. A sophisticated wine with its own distinctive character.'

    SAM KIM - WINE ORBIT

Expressing precision and seductive complexity; this splendid blanc de blancs shows aromas of white floral, grapefruit, apple and jasmine with engaging yeasty/brioche nuances. It is concentrated and elegantly weighted, exhibiting layers of fine texture and delicate fruit flavours, wonderfully enhanced by flowing mouthfeel and perfectly pitched acidity. Harmonious, sensual and persistent.'

MIKE BENNIE - THE WINE FRONT

Rudi Bauer (Quartz Reef) is near peerless in sparkling winemaking in New Zealand, with few seeming to be super-specialists of the genre. Alongside his prowess with fizz, he is of course a pioneer of Central Otago. He also could do a good job of being a Bond baddie, but he's just too funny and nice - the Austrian accent, unnerving precision and erect stance are deceiving... Incredibly fine, intense and vivacious sparkling wine. Shows pedigree from the get go, bright scents of pear, apple, sweet spice, fresh bread, but it's the palate that holds the power, a brisk yet deeply flavoured rush of fruit, spice, bready, savoury notes and ultra fine, frisky bead. Superb drinking. Class.'

    RAYMOND CHAN

Bright, even, light golden-yellow colour, a little paler edged with slight green tints, the bubbles refined and moderately persistent.. The nose is elegant in concentration with deeply packed with an amalgam of white florals, nutty complexities, and deep, detailed bready-yeasty autolysis along with subtle hints of aldehyde and toast. This has depth, intensity and layers of aromatics. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a soft and densely concentrated heart of white stonefruits with citrus fruit, floral suggestions and fresh herbs, along with an intense layer of bready and yeasty autolytic detail. The flavours are rich, yet refined, and flow with excellent energy enlivened by soft acidity and subtle effervescence, leading to a long and sustained line. This is a beautifully complex and refined Blac de Blancs method with fine stonefruit and intense autolysis on a softly fresh palate.' 19.5 / 20 Points
