  • THE BRIEF
  • Bargain, aged Marg's Cabernet from the current home of the Jimmy Watson Trophy, Xanadu. And just like it's more fabled brethren, the Xanadu Exmoor Cabernet also managed to steal a cracking score from the Royal Melbourne Wine Show, winning a gold and 95 points in the 2017 competition.

It's sturdy, savoury, dry, substantial and real. A proper Cab, complete with tannins and all, from the Jimmy Watson Trophy winning Xanadu winery.

    A real bargain.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Exmoor Drive leads to the southern boundary of Xanadu's Boodjidup vineyard in Margaret River. Here in Australia's remote south-west corner, the pristine maritime climate and ancient soils combine to produce wines of character and distinction. Select parcels of fruit from low yielding vines have been chosen to produce this quintessential Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. This vibrant, full bodied wine is packed with blackcurrants, cassis and dark chocolate flavours, entwined with hints of spicy toasty oak.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Xanadu Wines was established by Dr John Lagan in 1977. Located in Margaret River, Western Australia, where the Mediterranean climate not only offers a perfect grape growing environment, but its idyllic scenery is a testament to its poetic namesake, an exotic setting for making wines that embody all that is Margaret River. A highly respected winery tucked away in Australia’s south-western corner, Xanadu is proud of its ongoing commitment to crafting exciting wines of outstanding quality.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Includes 5% cabernet franc, 3% merlot and 2% petit verdot, 20% enjoyed a pre-fermentation cold soak, 30% given extended maceration for 28 days, matured for 14 months in French barriques (20% new). This is what you might expect of a $30 wine, not $18. It is bold upright with joie de vivre, juicy, yet pleasantly tart. A great drink for a celebration.

    JOE CZERWINSKI - WINE ADVOCATE

This is a fine value in weeknight Cabernet, showing supple tannins, regionally distinct aromas and flavors of currants, sage and bay leaf, and subtle oak. Drink this fruit-driven, silky wine through 2020.

To finish off the fascinating trio of Exmoor wines, you will not be surprised to learn that 2013 Exmoor Cabernet is another wine wearing this badge, which over-performs to such a degree that you think you’ve made a mistake. I can assume you, you haven’t but it will check again. Just one more time for luck. 100 Best Australian Wines of 2017
