2013 Yarraloch Stephanie's Dream Pinot Noir

2013 Yarraloch Stephanie's Dream Pinot Noir

It’s smoky. It’s herbal. It’s strewn with leaves and spices, like a wine windswept, like a savoury storm. It’s cherried at heart, of course, sour-cherried, almost cranberried, with streaks of bitterness and spots of stalk, all strung out, all pulling on the wine, all building tension, like points of drama, like it’s plotting to mesmerise you. It succeeded. I sat, at the desk, at work, enthralled. This is a wine.

  • "Unashamedly inspired by the great wines of Europe, the singular focus of Yarraloch is to create World Class wines from the Yarra Valley which are distinguished by their elegance, balance and complexity."
    Stephen Wood, Yarraloch

    A very welcome return.
The most sought-after, and keenly requested Pinot Noir in our entire history has made a come-back, and this time, it brings with it the passage of time, and the perfect cellaring conditions of the wineries cold storage.

When we first uncovered the Yarraloch Stephanie's Dream Pinot Noir, shortly after Campbell Mattinson of The Wine Front awarded it 97 points, we were absolutely shocked at just how good Yarra Pinot, with a singular focus on whole bunch grapes can be. This was a monumental wine. Forthright, and determined to stand out from the crowd, the Stephanie's Dream, a special 'reserve' level bottling, was stalky, sap drenched, and almost violently complex. The kamikaze like fruit intertwining with the scorched earth, coffee bean, pepperberry and dried rose leaf. This is a wine, and after 5 years in the cellar, it is starting to unfurl into the greatest stage of its life.

Made at Oakridge winery. Only 150 dozen are made, and only a very small amount of stock was released from the winery's museum program.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Only being produced in the best vintages, when the conditions are right and the quality exceptional, the Stephanie's Dream range represents the culmination of the best fruit and techniques available at Yarraloch.

The 2013 vintage is unique. Whilst being made under contract at Oakridge, the team decided to utilise a larger portion of whole-bunch fruit. As the Gruyere site sits a little higher and was thus shielded from the late Summer heat-wave, the stems were perfectly ripened in time with the fruit. The net result is a wine of added complexity and smokiness.

Fermented naturally in open wood fermenters using 80% whole bunches. Natural yeasts, and the wine is aged in 30% new oak, 20% 1 year old and the remaining in older oak.

    Alcohol - 13.0%

    TASTING NOTES

This wine shows a complex nose of ripe dark cherries, plums and spicy oak nuances. The palate is juicy yet savoury with concentrated dark fruits supported by firm tannins and a long crisp finish.

'It’s always a joy when a wine like this arrives on the tasting bench. 150 dozen made. 80% whole bunch. It’s smoky. It’s herbal. It’s cherried at heart, of course, sour-cherried, almost cranberried, with streaks of bitterness and spots of stalk, all strung out, all pulling on the wine, all building tension, like points of drama, like it’s plotting to mesmerise you. '80% whole bunch. 150 dozen. An outstanding wine in all respects. Ripped with herbs, awash with wood smoke, plush with fruit and undergrowth and strung with tannin. Everything is firm, purposeful, dripping with character. There's a velvety aspect to the texture, for good measure. This is what it's all about.'
