The Syrah represents a serious 'over engineering' of fruit and winemaking inputs to produce a wine that shows little compromise in quality alongside wines of many times the price.
Fruit is sourced from three primary vineyards that range from 30 to 80 years in age.
Incorporation of Syrah from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs provides elegance, spice and a strong natural acid backbone with Willunga fruit adding mulberry and anise.
With no reliance on the trends or dogma of the industry, Coates wines focuses on producing small batch wines that capture the sensory delights truest to region and varietal. Coates is owned and operated by Duane Coates, whose years of experience working in Australia and Europe has given him a broad perspective on techniques and styles. This Syrah has been made using fruit from vines aged between 16 to 80 years. Matured in 25% new French oak and 75% in old French and Russian oak give the wine its savoury characters. Unfined and unfiltered, this is a elegant and enjoyable wine.

Duane Coates has a long held passion for Australian and overseas wines. He expanded his winemaking training with vintages in Burgundy with Chateau Demessey, the Rhone Valley with Domaine Francois Villard and the Douro Valley with the Fladgate Partnership (Taylor’s). Exposure to European wines and winemaking has given Duane a broad perspective on techniques and wines styles and heavily influenced the winemaking philosophy of Coates Wines is not predicated on fashion or blind adherence to dogma. The processes they use (and avoid) have grown from experience and understanding with the aim of making wines in a way that provide sensory delights that are truest to region and variety.
CAMPBELL MATTINSON - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION
Interesting on both flavour and texture levels. This red has something about it. Peanuts, black cherries, plums and sweet, fresh herb notes are the speakers but the overall effect is an entity in itself. It's a different, but worthy expression of the region's shiraz.'
