  • 'A winery with a proud 19th-century record, Craiglee recommenced winemaking in 1976 after a prolonged hiatus. Produces one of the finest cool climate Shirazs in Australia, redolent of cherry, licorice and spice.'
    James Halliday

Originally established in the 1860s by one of Melbourne's founding fathers, James Johnston, Craiglee Vineyard was absent from the Australian wine landscape until it was replanted in 1976 by an enthusiastic agricultural science graduate called Pat Carmody.

Now one of Australia's most highly regarded and awarded wineries, Craiglee is still run with the loving attention of Pat and Dianne Carmody with the occasional input of their sons.

This wine is highly aromatic with rhubarb, blueberry, raspberry and violets on the nose. The palate is savoury with persistent blackberry flavours plus a load of pepper and spices, then a wave of fine tannins to complete the picture. Oak, fruit and acidity are in perfect balance in an expressive and stylish wine.

    Alc-vol - 13.5%

'Has the guile that is at the heart of Craiglee style, the flavours fresh, with more red fruit than black, an omnipresent pinch of spice, and a splash of licorice and forest all combining to seduce the senses before you register the underlying intensity and length of the fruit. Tannins and French oak are also present, but it's not until the finish and aftertaste that they leave their mark.'

'A fragrant, peppery, classic Craiglee aroma, fruit-driven and elegant, the oak tucked quietly out of view. Medium to full-bodied and firm; tight and refined. A very fine, elegant shiraz with beautiful balance and style. This will age long-term and be great drinking over many years.'

'In terms of personal preference with regards to style, I like the 2013. In terms of absolute quality, hard to pick them apart.
Violet, black pepper, blackberry, meat and spice, almost into liquorice. Full bodied, tobacco and savoury stuff, perhaps a touch clunky right now, but brighter feel in the mouth with raspberry and spices, and good long finish. Almost ropey tannin here, and it feels very much a vin de garde. Very good, but wait.'
