Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy Winner - Royal Melbourne Wine Show

  • Well look what we have here!

12 bottles, all sold individually, of one of the most sought after, uber-hyped wines of the last decade.

Long thought sold out - aside from the secondary market where it sells for upwards of $150 a bottle - these will be the last of the famed 2014 Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon anywhere in retail land. After all, it has won the Jimmy Watson trophy, was declared the Wine of the Year by Ray Jordan, awarded 97 points from James Suckling, James Halliday and Huon Hooke, and picked up the Trophy for best Wine at the Adelaide Wine Show. If you have some squirreled away - then count your blessings, but if you are like everyone else who has begged for a bottle or two in the last 18 months, then here is your chance to secure one. Finally~

And what a wine it is too. Exceptional, pure, clean Margaret River Cabernet with just so much class and appeal. Julian Langworthy has been on a role, and with this wine and subsequent Jimmy Watson win, it has sent his stocks in to the stratosphere. Grab it while you still can!

All stock was sourced direct from the winery, and stored in commercial wine-fridges.

Representing the pinnacle of any given vintage, the 2014 Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted from the very low-yielding original vines on the estate, along with fruit from a single grower also in the Yallingup region of Margaret River.

The 2014 harvest in Margaret River was a perfect Cabernet season. Relatively mild day-time temperatures and cool nights prevailed throughout late February and this allowed premium fruit parcels to be picked in perfect condition in early April once peak tannin and flavor ripeness was achieved.  Each parcel of fruit was afforded the utmost attention in the winery with winemaking techniques aimed at optimising and enhancing the individual character of each block. Throughout the fermentation each batch was pumped over twice daily to gently extract colour, flavour and tannin from the skins. Upon completion of fermentation, the wine was drained from its skins
directly to a combination of new and seasoned French barriques where it
was allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation and mature for 18 months.

    Alcohol 14.1%, pH 3.52, TA 7.1 g/L, residual sugar 0.5g/L

Deep crimson with vivid purple hues. This wine has incredible life and aromatic intensity abounding in concentrated cassis and blueberry fruit flavours; further nuanced by overtones of star anise and graphite-like minerality.

An effortless ripe tannin structure frames a powerful and majestic palate providing complex and generous varietal flavours, including blackberry, plum and cassis. This concentration of fruit flavours is supported by delicately interwover French oak characters and a savoury complexity. This powerful, detailed wine will reward careful long-term cellaring.

'These Reserve Deep Woods Cabernets have been on the top shelf for some time now and this is another cracker that is as good as any produced so far. A striking feature is the balance and how well the tannin and fruit have come together into a powerful collective that effortlessly punches out to the long finish. The more elegant and stylish yet and a marvelous statement of what this part of Margaret River can do. Cellar 20 years. '
98 Points - Ray Jordan (Wine of the Year, Red Wine of the Year)

'Elegance and purity personified. The varietal expression is pitch perfect, cassis standing proud, its handmaidens fine-grained tannins and cedary French oak. It is an effortless wine, no more than medium-bodied, and needs no further elaboration. Shades of Xanadu.'
    97 Points - James Halliday

'Very deep, brilliant and young purple/red hue, with a bouquet which is likewise very fresh and primal, featuring lots of green bean among its strong herbal notes and very much a regional expression of cabernet. Full-bodied, firm and statuesque: a powerhouse of a wine. This needs time and will be very long lived. The rating reflects the future more than the present: it's too young to drink.'
    97 Points - Huon Hooke

'This has superb ripeness and deep-set cassis in addition to dark cherries and other cabernet fruit on the nose. Sweet herbals and leafiness also come through. The oak is stylishly applied; it has terrific class and purity. The palate has a very concentrated core of ripe tannin that holds the middle of the palate with an expansive, building frame that's saturated in plum and black-cherry flavors. There's a lick of iodine, too. This is long and seamless, muscular and supple. Terrific balance. Drink now to 2030+'
