'Has the gently throbbing power of a Rolls Royce; superb, deep crimson-purple hue, itself rare in the Hunter Valley. Countless layers of black fruits have absorbed the oak and put the undoubted tannins into limbo land.'
99 Points - James Halliday

  • Maurice O'Shea was a pioneer of Australian wine, creating long-lived, highly celebrated wines from the 1920s through to the 1950s that were admired the world over. Named in Maurice O'Shea's honour, this wine was crafted using the very best rigorously selected parcels from the Mount Pleasant Estate to create a wine that firmly speaks of its Hunter Valley home.

The Maurice O'Shea Shiraz is the flagship red wine for the Mount Pleasant and is a blend of the best fruit available, only made in the best years. Fermented at 18-25°C for approximately 7 days. Gently pressed to large format French oak barrels for almost 18 months maturation, before blending and bottling.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

After the hot dry end to 2013, near perfect January weather has resulted in an outstanding vintage of intensity and wonderful balance. The whites are pristine & pure, with great length & line while the flavour packed reds are showing early signs of a superb year in the Hunter Valley. The best red vintage in 50 years. The Mount Pleasant Shiraz quickly followed the Semillon, revealing tremendous colour and flavour from the onset. Both the 'Old Hill' (Planted 1880) and the 'Old Paddock' (planted 1921) being the stars of the estate. Rosehill Shiraz was last, but by no means least. Lovely perfume & spice coupled with fruit intensity & perfect structure, sees Rosehill vying for line honours in a great vintage for Hunter Shiraz. Arguably, one of the greatest red vintages in living memory.

    TASTING NOTES

Amazingly intense red and black fruits combine with spice to create a beautiful and complex aroma. Powerful fruits come to the fore, with perfect acid and tannin balance providing an exhilarating intensity and length.

  • REVIEWS

'Arguably, one of the greatest red vintages in living memory', says Mount Pleasant. The flagship wine. Destemmed and crushed, short cold soak, open-fermented, matured in large format French oak (30% new) for 18 months. Has the gently throbbing power of a Rolls Royce; superb, deep crimson-purple hue, itself rare in the Hunter Valley. Countless layers of black fruits have absorbed the oak and put the undoubted tannins into limbo land. O'Shea would have died a happy man had this been his last wine. Dissecting it now is an academic exercise at best, so great is its future. This is as close to a 100-year potential as you are ever likely to find.'

'Maurice O’Shea is back on form, thanks to the aligning of the planets in the epic 2014 vintage coinciding with Jim Chatto’s taking of the reins at this historic estate. The result is epically chalk mineral in its structural finesse, built on a core of super fine yet remarkably enduring tannins, with notes of black plum skin, coal dust and a demeanour of calm energy. Maurice is back.'
    97 Points - Tyson Stelzer

'It tends towards richness without quite getting there; another way of saying that it mines the perfect fruit intensity zone for a Hunter Valley red. It’s all cherries, red and black, with boysenberry and even plum, though rusty spice and red earth characters play key roles too. We have ourselves here a perfectly turned out wine. Tannin ties a ribbon around the old vine fruit in a most beguiling – and assertive – fashion. Creamy oak lends a hand, but a gentle and guiding one at most; it’s the bus driver, not the bus. The mouthfeel: silken without being syrupy. This will still be ticking over in captivating fashion in 20 years time.'
