'The bouquet is perfumed and very charming; flowers and red fruits, a lick of mixed spice. It's ripe and clean, the palate full-bodied but smooth textured and refined.'

  • "Nicolás Catena Zapata is justly credited with putting Argentinean wines on the world map—by the best expedient of focusing entirely on quality. It's great to know he has started a wine dynasty, too."
    Jancis Robinson

Owned today by Nicolás Catena and his daughter Laura, Bodega Catena Zapata is known as the pioneer of fine wine from Argentina, and Nicolás is recognized as the vintner who revolutionized wine quality in Argentina.

When Catena wines were first launched in 1992, they set a new standard for quality in South America. The wines immediately proved the quality potential of Argentina and garnered the first outstanding reviews for Argentine wines from worldwide media. After more than 20 years, the wines of Catena continue to lead the way in Argentine viticulture and winemaking.

This Catena Malbec is sourced and blended from the family´s high-altitude vineyards in Maipú, Lujan de Cuyo, Tupungato and San Carlos. Each vineyard is specifically farmed in preparation for its role in the final blend. 80-year-old vines in Lunlunta (Maipù) Vineyard lend soft, sweet texture and the lauded Catena cuttings in Agrelo (Luján de Cuyo) Vineyard add notes of spice. The cold nights in Altamira (San Carlos) Vineyard lend bright, crisp acidity and the intense sunshine in Gualtallary (Tupungato) Vineyard give explosive floral aromatics and concentrated structure. This combination of different vineyard components results in a wine with heightened complexities and unique character that has natural balance, concentration and a distinct varietal identity.

The Catena wines are made from 100% estate-grown fruit from the Catena family’s high-altitude vineyards. These wines are a blend of single varietals from various locations within these vineyard sites. Each vineyard is farmed in preparation for its role in the final blend, and each is harvested and vinified separately in order to preserve the unique expression, aromas and flavors of the fruit. This ultimately brings to the blend the strengths of each vineyard, adding a heightened complexity to the final wine.

Vinification - This wine goes through an extensive cold maceration for 5 days at 48ºF (8,8ºC) to extract aromas. The juice is then fermented for 16 days with a post-fermentation maceration of 22 days. Wild Yeasts. Elevage: 12-14 months in barrel. Barrel selection varies depending on vineyard and vintage - First, second and third use barrels used.

    Alcohol - 13.5%

Deep aromas of ripe red and dark fruits are joined by delicate violet and lavender notes, with traces of vanilla and mocha. A rich, concentrated mouthfeel is highlighted by flavors of blueberries and blackberries with a touch of leather and cinnamon. The wine has well-integrated tannins, bright acidity and a flinty minerality that provides exceptional length to the finish.

'Deep red/purple, bright colour. The bouquet is perfumed and very charming; flowers and red fruits, a lick of mixed spice. It's ripe and clean, the palate full-bodied but smooth textured and refined, elegant and harmonious. It's far from a blockbuster. A very tidy wine, elegant and balanced.'

'Aromas of blackberry and walnut with hints of flowers. Medium body, focused and bright with dried fruit and just a hint of mushroom in the aftertaste. Drink now.'
    92 Points - James Suckling

'The impressive 2015 Catena Malbec is subtle, balanced and elegant. It mixes fruit from many different zones, with the grapes from the higher part of Valle de Uco fermented with full clusters, the medium part (Vista Flores, lower La Consulta) destemmed and put together with the full clusters from the higher altitude vineyards and the lower parts totally destemmed and in stainless steel. This is a complex blend that showcases the typicity of Malbec in the province of Mendoza with perfumed notes of violets and black cherries, and a touch of spices. The palate has great balance, elegance and subtleness with very fine tannins. Great value for money. The production figures are truly impressive as this is in the ballpark of one million bottles per year.'
    91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

'Deep cherry red. Gently dark-fruited and fragrant. Beautifully subtle and elegant on the palate. There's plenty of fruit though it is not fruit forward thanks to excellent harmony of the parts - fruit and tannins and freshness. It becomes a little more expressive in the glass and shows an attractive dusty/stony quality. A hint of oak spice and oak sweetness on the finish and the silkiest of tannins already - but no sense it is not going to age well. So fresh and supple. Tastes fresher than the numbers suggest.'
