'One of the most singular, majestic Condrieu I’ve ever tasted. White peach, white flowers, hints of citrus oil, and subtle minerality all flow to a thrilling pure, elegant, yet powerful wine that could only come from this incredible terroir. Long and silky, with nothing out of place, it's as good as Condrieu gets.'

Georges Vernay, the saviour of Condrieu, and the man who put the region firmly back on the map, and producer of some of the 'greatest white wines in the world' has found his way to My Wine Guy.
Now produced and made by his daughter, these wines continue to evoke and beholden anyone who has the chance to taste. Known as the 'doyen of Condrieu', the Vernay Coteau de Vernon is the opus. The masterstroke. His top pinnacle wine from his three single vineyard collection and the one everyone gravitates to. Securing any volume of this wine is near-on-impossible, because production is tiny and this wine features on everyone's most wanted list.
Grown on an incredible steep granite terrace, the Côteau de Vernon, created in 1940 by Christine’s grand-father Francis, is the reference amongst all Condrieu: 60 years old vines on decomposed granite locally called “gore”, it is a wine of great personality and definition and has on numerous occasion shown a surprising ability to age.
50% 1936 Viognier planted by Francis Vernay, father of Georges, 50% 1960s Viognier from two faces of Vernon slope, fermented, raised 25% new, 75% 2-4 year oak 12-16 months.
The Coteau de Vernon is the very heart of the Condrieu appellation and that of our estate and the wine which carries its name offers the most complex and yet subtle expressions of viognier. It is a wine with a restrained exuberance, a quintessential Condrieu.
In its early years it offers great concentration, a strength that dares not reveal itself. It is only after many years in the cellar that it fully and truly expresses itself.
A dense yellow robe here. Smoky oak-vanilla airs sit above one of pear in syrup, ripe apricot. This is a solid, fuelled bouquet. It is still very much in the cellar, on its raising. The palate connects closely to the nose, so is full and coated, a textured wine with fine borders, a release from the density. The flavour for now is a concentrated pear. It holds fine acidity, if not great amounts of it. This has luxury and hidden moments, a very good potential to draw in considerate drinkers. It has structure, a bit like a red wine. 14.5%.
'One of the most singular, majestic Condrieu I’ve ever tasted is the 2015 Condrieu Coteau De Vernon. I wish I could pour a taste of this heavenly wine for every reader. White peach, white flowers, hints of citrus oil, and subtle minerality all flow to a thrilling pure, elegant, yet powerful wine that could only come from this incredible terroir. Long and silky, with nothing out of place, it's as good as Condrieu gets. The benchmark estate in Condrieu is unquestionably that of Christine Vernay, who pulls from the magical hillside of Coteau du Vernon located just behind her home. This is pure granite terroir and all three of her Condrieu come basically from this steep hillside. Christine prefers a slightly longer élevage on her Condrieu, with the 2015s being the current release.'

'Penetrating aromas of ripe citrus and pit fruits, violet and honey are joined by suggestions of chalky minerals and ginger. Juicy and deeply concentrated on the palate, offering expansive pear nectar, Meyer lemon and floral flavors that show superb clarity and mineral drive. There's a wonderful blend of richness and energy here, and I can find no rough edges. The mineral and floral notes carry strongly through the strikingly long, incisive, seamless finish, which hangs on with outstanding focus and tenacity.'
