2015 Fighting Gully Road Shiraz

2015 Fighting Gully Road Shiraz

Uses 35% whole bunches on the bottom of the fermenter, 2% viognier skins on top of the whole bunches, then 63% crushed/destemmed on top, left alone to ferment naturally until 2% baume left, then pigeaged, 3 weeks on skins in total, matured in new and used French oak for 18 months. This approach, coupled with 13.5% alcohol, results in a vibrantly fresh, fragrant and lively wine bursting with cherry fruit, spice and pepper. Now the journey in the bottle begins.

DESCRIPTION
  • Mark Walpole is behind Fighting Gully Road and he has a serious resume. Brown Brothers, then Greenstone but he consults all round the country, particularly on Spanish and Italian varieties.

This wine is grown on his own vineyard, planted in 1997, and is very similar to a Giaconda Shiraz - maybe a bit meatier, spicy, sandalwood aromas, blackberry, earth and leather with lots of well integrated tannins. It is seriously brilliant stuff, concentrated yet understated and, in my opinion, the best Shiraz we have had for a while.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Classical cool climate Shiraz, showing spice, white pepper, and red berry fruits. A full, yet medium-bodied palate with very fine-grained tannins. Our fourth Shiraz from the Fighting Gully Road site has a tannin structure that will ensure that it will with the help of screw cap closure age well for the next decade or more.

    Alc/vol - 13.5%
