  • HEAD Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia.
    Alex showcases a distinctive house style of powerful fruit weight, elegance, freshness, finesse and balance which starts by farming vineyards sustainably and in some cases using organics and biodynamics. Yields are low/controlled, grapes are hand-picked, ferments use indigenous yeasts with some retention of stems and maturation in larger format barrels. Minimal sulphur is used during the whole wine-making process and bottling is without fining or filtration.

    Luckily, Alex has access to very small parcels of fruit from old, dry-grown, hand-pruned/picked vineyards. He decided that making a Grenache the way Barossan families made table wines many generations ago would honour the years of back-breaking work required for keeping the vineyards feasible and sustainable.  The Head 'Old Vine' Grenache is from the best performing Barossa Valley Grenache vineyard each year, and in 2015 comprises an 101 year old site located in Greenock. 


    Old Vine’ Grenache planted circa 1960 on red clay over bluestone and ironstone at 290m elevation near Greenock on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. Green harvested before veraison by 50% and shoot thinned to ensure ultimate quality of the grapes at time of harvest. Split hand-picked at 14% and 15% potential alcohol over a week. 15% whole-bunch, no crushing or temperature control, natural yeasts, hand plunged and foot trodden twice daily for 20 days. Racked once during elevage of 12 months in larger, older barrels. Here the Grenache flirts with Burgundy rather than Rhone in its colour, texture and finesse. Bottled unfined and unfiltered under stelvin capsule.


    Deep crimson red with brilliant clarity, poise, almost shimmering in the glass. Aromas of fresh red cherries and fruit spice, aniseed, cured meat and forest floor. Barely medium bodied in extract with sweet, textural red fruit flavours and lingering, sweet mouthwatering tannins. Great persistence and length of flavour here. Would suit gamey dishes. Drink now or up to 15 years.


    'From a 101yo vineyard, there is a peppery, fibrous composure to this grenache, mitigating the variety's explosive tendencies. Chiselled of slate, grenache's liquid kirsch qualities are nevertheless on full display. These are restrained by a dollop of old vine mataro for ferruginous grip, 10% stems in the ferment and a gentle extraction regime, employing whole berries and wild yeast, before ageing in older oak for 17 months. The result is pure, unadulterated pleasure across the entire bottle.'
