'It takes deliciousness and wraps both arms around it. And yet it's firm with tannin too. A complete package.'

  • "Hentley farm has a single-minded focus on producing what is as close as you're ever going to find in Australia to Grand Cru Burgundy or first-growth Bordeaux"
James Halliday - awarding Hentley Farm Winery of the Year in 2015

Stray Mongrel. Strange name, bloody good blend. The addition of Zinfandel to the traditional blend of Grenache and Shiraz is unique to Hentley Farm, and this wine is something pretty special. It's Barossa on steroids.

With each variety separately crushed, fermented and matured, the Stray Mongrel displays the level of aromatic and flavour complexity you would expect from a blend of such diverse varietals. It is the perfect companion to a variety of culinary delights.

Components were destemmed on arrival to the winery prior to fermentation. The winemaking was split across three separate fermentations, the major component (65%) was put through an extended maceration lasting a total of 50 days on skins. The second component (20%) was picked late in the season and cold soaked for 5 days before fermentation and the final component (15%) was picked early in the season and put through a short fermentation with a large portion of whole bunch. All three components were pressed directly to oak and put through natural malolactic fermentation followed by 8 months maturation before blending and bottling in

Traditional Grenache aromatics shine through on this pretty and alluring nose. Turkish delight, and Raspberries combine with a strong and complex spice influence. Some of these reds fruits follow through to the palate where they combine with a surprising savoury influence lead predominately by the even grippy tannins. Bound to surprise with its combination of pretty aromatics and masculine tannin. Poise and power all rolled into one!

'Crackerjack blend of grenache, shiraz and zinfandel. Pure licorice and raspberry, ribbons of spice, charcuterie and dark chocolate. Coffee grounds too perhaps. It takes deliciousness and wraps both arms around it. And yet it's firm with tannin too. A complete package.'

'Medium to full red colour with a tinge of purple; the aroma is spicy and sweetly cherry essence-like. Hints of crème de cassis. There is abundant sweet fruit throughout the wine. The tannins are light and soft on the finish. A rich, fruit-driven style, with a high degree of ripeness giving a touch of succulence.'
    Huon Hooke

'The Stray Mongrel is such a good name for a blend of this ilk, indeed grenache and shiraz are joined by zinfandel here.

This is a good quaffer with just a bit more wind in its sails. Fresh fruited in perfume and flavours, ripe berries, dark chocolate, wood spice, tobacco all going on. Slips into the palate sweet fruited and medium weight with some sinewy tannin backing it up. The finish is a touch tart and lemony, but the wine feels good, warming, sweet ‘n’ spicy overall. Good buy.'
