2015 Holm Oak The Wizard Chardonnay

2015 Holm Oak The Wizard Chardonnay

Whole bunch-pressed, wild-fermented (including 100% mlf) and matured in French oak, a barrel selection made in Jan '16, and matured further in 100% new oak. Gleaming green-gold; the wine is described by Holm Oak as bigger, richer and more complex than the Estate wine. I would add a big asterisk and say it retains finesse and purity, the mlf needed to secure its balance.

DESCRIPTION
  • Top of the line Tassie Chardonnay from Holm Oak - this wine absolutely casts a spell. Whole bunch pressed, 50% undergoing malolactic work and the rest matured in high quality French Oak. It is taken from the best two barrels of fruit for the vintage, and designated under the special 'The Wizard' label. Exemplary stuff, and starting to really open up and sing its good song now. 96 James Halliday who saw value in the richness, but also found the requisite finesse one would generally associate with Tasmania.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

'The Wizard' Chardonnay is a blend of only the five best barrels of Chardonnay from the 2016 vintage. The fruit for this wine was whole bunch pressed and then transferred to barrel for full wild fermentation. 80% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and 80% was matured in new French oak. A mix of coopers is used to ensure we get good complexity without overt oak characters. The wine was lees stirred monthly for 12 months prior to being bottled in June 2016.

    TASTING NOTES

This is a refined and elegant Chardonnay. Full barrel fermentation with 80% new oak and 100% wild fermentation has resulted in a wine with great complexity and style. The nose displays aromas of citrus fruit, apricot kernel and white peach with spicy integrated oak, whilst the palate is fine and minerally.
