  • THE BRIEF
  • The Prelude Vineyards label focuses on the benchmark varietals of the region and represent the first release Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from Leeuwin Estate each vintage. They are site expressive wines that encase the purity and clarity of fruit with a style that is readily expressive for earlier release. The label celebrates the Estate's association with the musical arts through the staging of the alfresco Leeuwin Concert Series.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • After individual berry sorting and cold soaking, fermentation took place in closed and open fermenters at temperatures up to 30C with extraction by pumping over each individual lot three times daily. After malolactic fermentation entirely in barrels and 9 months of barrel maturation, separate parcels are blended for further maturation in French Bordelaise coopered barriques with seasonal rackings.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Lifted, lively and elegant, the nose is a myriad of red cherries, currants, boysenberries and plums. Cumin, dried sage and star anise combine with subtle savoury oak characters. The palate is lively and full of energy with balanced and bright acidity. Currants and red cherries are prominent throughout with hints of clove and mocha present on the mid palate. There is a mineral line towards the finish that meets gently structured talc-like tannins.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • In 1972, Denis and Tricia Horgan contacted famous American winemaker Robert Mondavi to help them with their plans to turn their cattle farm into a highly respected Margaret River wine producer. The winery enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979. Since that time the Horgans and Leeuwin Estate have made an astounding contribution to Australian wine, most particularly with their Art Series Chardonnay that is still widely considered to be amongst the best this country produces. Recent vintages have also seen their Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon also jump ahead leaps and bounds. Today Leeuwin Estate is also very well known for the excellent concerts held on their grassy knoll directly below the cellar door which draw thousands of visitors every year.

    TYSON STELZER

'Capturing all of the fragrant elegance, crunch and medium-bodied refinement of Cabernet at the same time as depth, power, character and persistence is a delicate balancing act at the best of times, and all the more harrowing at a value price. The wizardry of the modern Leeuwin outfit is defined in its flagships, but it is truly cemented here in this astonishingly affordable Cabernet.'

'Lots of plum and berry character with hints of rose petals and stems, too. Medium body, firm and lightly chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink in 2021. Screw cap.'

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

'Medium to deep red colour with a tint of purple. The bouquet has some violet, red and blue berry and leafy nuances, while the palate is quite taut, firm and lean, tightly-packed and tense, with an over-arching impression of elegance. Very good value.'
