DESCRIPTION
  • I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again, but Michael Hall is one the most exciting producers coming out of the Barossa / Eden / Adelaide Hills triangle. His wines show so much elegance and restraint, coupled with a Northern Hemisphere feel, that it's easy to forget they're from South Australia.

The 2015 Flaxman's Valley Syrah is one of those wines that makes you sit back and smile. Dark berry core, with crushed rock minerality, violet florals and plenty of gamey/meaty character. It's a wine that draws you in, and demands attention - certainly not a quaffer. For those who love Northern Rhone styles, I reckon you'll be very pleasantly surprised.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

The Naimanya vineyard sits high in the tiny sub-region of Flaxman’s Valley, on soils of sandy loam, gravel and quartz over clay. At 520m elevation it is one of the highest Shiraz vineyards in South Australia. High winter rainfall, followed by a cool spring and summer delivered gradual ripening and a late harvest. Hand picked on 20th March, 85% destemmed to open fermenter, 15% whole bunch to closed puncheon with 40 days maceration. Matured in French oak (10% new) for 20 months. No fining or filtration.

    TASTING NOTES

Dried violets, redcurrant fruit, black olive and cedary oak. The stunningly elegant palate is structured and complex with red fruits and a wonderful meaty/gamey savouriness leading to a long finish with layers and layers of flavour. This is reminiscent of the Northern Rhone. Outstanding.

'This is good from every angle. Volume, finesse, length, shape, those little extra intricacies. You name it. Both spice and tannin ripple through the wine; cloves, blackberries, washes of boysenberry and fresh plum, hints of cedarwood and earth flavours combine to hold your interest. Nothing pokes out but it’s all there if you go looking. Tannin is fine for the most part but keeps an extra growl for the absolute finish, in a good way.'
