Mount Peak winery is one of many 'ghost' wineries that were abandoned in the 1920s and '30s, due to prohibition. For decades, the three-story, gravity flow, stone winery lay dormant, gradually being reclaimed by nature, stone by stone.
Today, Gallo Wines have revitalised the vineyards and surrounding area, producing wines from these beautifully old vines, that now have a new lease on life. The range of wines they create reflect the heritage and prestige of the original winery, and celebrate the unique parcels of fruit, grown in this inspiring landscape.
57% Petite Sirah, 15% Sangiovese, 15% Zinfandel, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Grenache
Gravity Red Blend is named for a remote, hard-to-reach block on one of the lowest slopes of the Monte Rosso Vineyard. Its location on the edge of a canyon and its steepness produces grapes with exceptional intensity.
Five varietals—Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache—lend power and depth to this red blend. The wine is layered with concentrated notes of black cherry plum, black cherry, plum, blackberry and hints of cocoa powder and coffee. Woven together are layers of black truffle, caramel and toasty oak with assertive tannins and a long, concentrated finish.
The story of Mount Peak Winery begins more than a century ago at the celebrated Monte Rosso Vineyard and culminates with the recent revival of the brand by Gallo. A vestige of one of California's great "ghost" wineries, the wines are a tribute to the extraordinary facility that once stood there.
Originally built in 1886, Mount Peak was a marvel of innovation with its three-story, gravity-flow system built from rock directly sourced from the dry-farmed Monte Rosso vineyard. While it ultimately emerged as one of California's top producers, it was closed during Prohibition and left abandoned to the elements, laying silent for decades.
Over 130 years later, Gallo has revived the site and the vineyard, perched at nearly 1,300 feet along the spine of the Mayacamas Mountains, straddling the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The steep hillsides are set against a dramatic backdrop and the new Mount Peak label will focus on Cabernet, Zinfandel, and a red blend from the original Monte Rosso fruit.
Mainly Petite Syrah blended with Sangiovese, the 2015 Proprietary Red Blend Gravity is deep garnet-purple colored with profound crushed black and red currants notes over chocolate box, beef drippings and scorched earth with touches of dried herbs and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, it's very firm and chewy with lovely lift and a long, earthy finish. 6,750 cases produced.
