Winemaker Ben (Mr.) Riggs follows the philosophy “iconic wines from iconic regions”. Whether it’s McLaren Vale Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, or Clare Valley Riesling, his wines are expressing the essence of the vineyard and variety in a style that is big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance. In Ben’s own words: “Think Ella Fitzgerald – bombastic and powerful with a huge vocal range, yet with purity of tone and a gentle sensibility when needed.”
Mr. Riggs 2015 McLaren Vale Shiraz is a blend of two well know McLaren Vale vineyards, Gateway and Piebald Gully. This is the fifteenth release of Shiraz under the Mr. Riggs label.
This is the fifteenth release of Shiraz under the Mr. Riggs label, pristine fruit with dark red berries, hints of spice, earth, tar and leather, with seamlessly integrated oak are the prime characteristics. Ripe tannins are apparent but not overwhelming, meaning this is a wine which can be enjoyed now or in the next 10-15 years.
Piebald Gully is situated in the coolest sub-region of McLaren Vale, bordering the Adelaide Hills. Planted in deep sand over at the base of Willunga foothills and is virtually dry grown. Gateway Vineyard, so called as it stands just at the entrance to McLaren Vale, is located in the subregion of Seaview. The vines grow on top of a rather unusual amount of limestone rock and has views of the Gulf of St Vincent and the Adelaide Hills. Components of the 2015 Mr. Riggs Shiraz from both vineyards were blended three months prior to bottling.
