  • The Nativ winery lies in the idyllic countryside of Campania, where the focus is placed on native grape varieties and the expression of the unique terroir. Founder and winemaker Mario Ercolino chooses to work with the vineyards of Irpinia because of the unique soil composition, forged through the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. It is these fertile volcanic soils that lend the Nativ wines a distinct voice and aromatic complexity.

'Blu Onice' is named after a cave system near the town of Gesualdo in Campania, from which Onyx is mined. The stones that are extracted from this cave have particular blue streaks through them, which the locals have unsurprisingly called 'Blue Onyx.'

This wine is big and hearty - a definite food wine, but one that still possesses complexity and layers; not jammy fruit and alcohol heat. And given that last vintage was rated 95 Points by James Suckling, we can't wait to see what this one gets! Luca Maroni has already given it 97 Points (out of a possible 99!). Try it for yourself and see what the fuss is about.

100% Aglianico from Campania, grown in high rocky hills around the town of Irpinia. The fruit was pressed and given a cold soak, before fermentation on skins for 20 days. The wine then went through MLF before racking to French oak barrels for 14 months ageing.

Clear, black violet color. Deep aromas of cassis liqueur, chocolate and creme de violet, with shaved coconut oakiness. A full bodied palate with fruit cake spice, pomegranate fruit and leafy tobacco notes. Ripe, chewy tannins frame the wine, and carry it through to the big, oak-filled finish.

'The softness of its persuasive pulp of blackberry is the apex of gustatory fruitiness. The acidity, the great tannin and the pulpy persuasiveness of grapes, are perfectly melted in turgid and sweet expression. Then the majestic strength of the compositional extract, the oenological clearness, source of its unoxidised integrity. A great wine, among the absolute best Italian red wines.'

'Crazy aromas of blueberry, licorice, sandalwood and stone. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a magical finish of dark fruits, peaches and apricots. So exciting. Drink now.'
