'This is a deliciously rich, sweet-fruited Pinot Noir with dark red berry fruits and herb complexities on a bright, lively, finely extracted palate.'
18.5+/20 - Raymond Chan
Great wines have a basis of fruit concentration, length and sense of place. In working this close to nature there will sometimes be heartache and occasionally celebration; each year there is new promise, but always there is the excitement of discovery.
Tom's Block is 4.32 ha of 100% Pinot Noir, which were planted 1999. Fertile topsoil over deep Moutere Clay Gravel. North Facing. Site of the original shell trials. Dry Farmed. Organically Run.
Wild Yeast. Unfined. Unfiltered. Vegan.
Fragrant with hints of violets and chocolate supported by elegant restrained tannins.
This wine is another step in the evolution of Tom's Block under Todd Stevens. The vision is always 'less is more.' The fingerprint of the winemaker should be imperceptible, allowing the site to have a voice.
Our Moutere Clays provide an European edge the fruit is kept in check with an uplifting minerality and vibrancy. A wine which never tires or bores but rather offers a full juicy mouthful with a lingering complex finish. Just as the wine flows to the end of your palate there is a surge of flavour maintaining a satisfying mouthfeel.
Definitely drinkable but still precisely Pinot.
Continues the reputation Neudorf have built for unique cool climate Pinot.
Vintage Detail - A moderately sized harvest where the vagaries earlier in the season were outweighed by a "classic" ripening window. As a result we currently see wines which are moderate in alcohol while displaying ripe characters and maintaining purity and vibrance.
Alc/vol - 13.5%
'Dark, deep ruby-red colour with some black hues at heart, lighter on the rim. The nose is soft and gently voluminous with already complex aromas of ripe, savoury strawberry, cherry and raspberry fruit entwined with red floral, fresh and dried herbs and nuances of spice and undergrowth. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a richly sweet, vibrant core of dark-red cherry and berry fruit along with dark-red florals and subtle notes of fresh and dried herbs, with spice elements. The fruit is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity and the mouthfeel possesses energy and vitality. The fruit is underlined by fine-grained tannin extract, providing a positively driven core and line, leading to a fine-textured, sweet-fruited, lingering finish. This is a deliciously rich, sweet-fruited Pinot Noir with dark red berry fruits and herb complexities on a bright, lively, finely extracted palate. Serve with poultry, pork, lamb and beef dishes over the next 5-6 years.'
