2015 Oliver's Taranga HJ Reserve Shiraz

2015 Oliver's Taranga HJ Reserve Shiraz

Machine-harvested, Olivers Old Clone planted '48, destemmed and crushed, 3 days cold soak, wild yeast open-fermented, 10 days on skins, matured in French hogsheads (35% new). The quality of the 70yo estate vineyard is immediately obvious, the wine with a rare multiplicity of aromas and flavours spanning the earth and sky; old, polished leather, dark chocolate and rich, dark fruits, all caught in a silken web of purple and black fruits by ultra-soft, but persistent, tannins.

DESCRIPTION
  • The Oliver's Taranga HJ Reserve Shiraz is a pretty important bit of kit round the old McLaren Vale township. Not only is it the superstar reserve release wine from one of Australia's oldest and esteemed wineries, but it comes from an old block of grapes that has been a mainstayer of Penfolds Grange for years (2009, 10, 11 & 2012).

These select four blocks, pretty much the absolute pick of the fruit from a stellar vintage, are given the Corrina Wright treatment in the winery. It's a monolithic powerhouse. The undisputed champ, and easy to see why Pennies come knocking. This has got guts and flavour in spades, but with these little whisps of silky tannins and an undercurrent of violets, sage, blackberries, sarsparilla, colabean and tonka/mocha that keep everything on edge (and damn exciting).

Oliver's Taranga are rightfully one of the great wineries of Australia, and this flagship wine is deserving of the title. That it sells for $50 a bottle, while the same fruit ends up in Penfolds Grange for $900, is the real calling card. Get on it.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Over the 174 years plus that we have been growing grapes on the Taranga property, we haven’t seen an earlier finish to vintage. Well, not it living memory anyway! Usually we will harvest in February & March- but in 2015, we finished on the last day of February. Unheard of !! We had very low crops and a warm year, which sped up ripening. ‘Old Block’ handpicked 25th of February 2015, ‘South Block’ handpicked 23rd of February 2015.

    TASTING NOTES

Appearance Deep maroon. Cherry, blackberry compote, rum n’ raisin chocolate, sweet vanilla, spices and mocha. On the palate, bright blue and black fruited, savoury spice, mocha through the palate. Dense and flavoursome, the tannins are silky and integrated, with sage and black currant characters, framing this gorgeous expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz
