  • THE BRIEF
  • Orin Swift is the brainchild of a brilliant young man by the name of Dave Phinney. His Midas touch with grapes from seemingly anywhere in the world, is unusual, but the brilliance of the wines, his creativeness and unparalleled blending talents have built an incredible portfolio right out of the gate.'

'One of the most talented winemakers of our time'
    Robert Parker

'Phinney's commitment to winemaking and exceptionally savvy marketing is rivaled by a hearty disregard for the status quo. Even at age 45, he dislikes authority for authority's sake. Terroir? Single varietals? Site-specific bottlings? These tried-and-true techniques matter less to Phinney than simply procuring the best grapes to make the most drinkable blends.'

Palermo is where Cabernet comes to roost at Orin Swift Cellars, and a nod to the great, mailing-list only cult wines of the Napa Valley which winemaker David Phinney studied to understand the true art of winemaking (and to question and poke holes into everything he was ever told). Sourced from some of the most heralded vineyards in the region, this is a powerful, menthol and blackcurrant driven Cabernet. It's unwieldy in its youth, with so much dense, christmas pudding fruit, and monstrous tannins needing a good decant to really bring the wine alive.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec matured in 35% new oak for 10 months

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

A dark garnet hue sits in the glass with immediate aromas of ripe cassis and blackberry. Hints of cocoa, new oak and fir complement the juicy fruit mélange. A full-bodied entry is succeeded by a mid-palate of dark fruits and a smooth, integrated minerality. The tannins are well developed, allowing the wine to finish with length.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest worker. Deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it would eventually have to be for himself, so in 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the brand to what it is today.

    ANGUS HUGHSON

Quite a classic Napa Valley Cabernet style with beautiful pure cassis and a touch of dried herb fruits supported by fine oak. Voluptuous with layers of sweet fruit and ironstone flavours, this is bold and strong, with tannins guaranteeing a long future.

LISA PERROTTI-BROWN MW - WINE ADVOCATE

'Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Palermo Cabernet Sauvignon (mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with splashes of Merlot and Malbec) opens with notions of crushed red currants, blackberries and mulberries with touches of Indian spices, sandalwood and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a wonderfully spicy undercurrent with loads of red and black fruits and a chewy frame, finishing long and perfumed.'
