DESCRIPTION
  • Domaine Pierre Usseglio comprises 22 hectares of grapes planted across 15 distinct plots, with a wide variety of soil types. The majority of their vineyards are planted to Grenache, with smaller amounts of Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault.

The Cuvee de Mon Aieul, first made in 1998, comes from three distinct lieux dits: Les Serres to the South, La Crau to the West and La Guigasse to the North.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

100% Grenache, partial whole-bunch fermentation, and unusually for the region, fermented and aged in concrete tanks with just a small proportion - about 30% - aged in second and third use oak demi-muids.

    TASTING NOTES

Crimson colour in the glass. Lifted notes of kirsch, licorice, toasted spice and crushed flowers. The palate is seamless with a full-bodied profile. Elegant and fresh with fine, dusty tannins.

  • REVIEWS

'Made from 100% Grenache (from the Grande Serres, la Crau and La Guigasse lieux-dits) and completely destemmed, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aïeul is still aging in a mix of old demi-muids, and it’s a wine Thierry compares to the 2006, which I think is a reasonable comparison. Offering a big, rich, hedonistic style, with sweet tannin, full-bodied richness and classic ripe Grenache notes of black raspberries, melted licorice and roasted herbs, it’s already incredibly drinkable; I suspect it will remain that way for most of its life.'

'Lurid ruby-red. Exotic, intensely perfumed aromas of candied red and blue fruits, lavender and peppery spices, joined by a slowly emerging hint of garrigue. Fleshy and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated raspberry, cherry and fruitcake flavors and a spicy suggestion of white pepper. Shows excellent focus and a seamless quality on the finish, which is framed by suave, slow-building tannins.'
95 Points - Josh Raynolds, Vinous

'A bolder, more concentrated and compressed expression with darker plum and cherry fruits on the nose and palate. The power and concentration here is impressive. Gently chocolate-flavored at the finish. Terrific wine.'
