With over 43 vintages worth of winemaking experience in WA, Robert Bowen established his own label in 2009. There are few winemakers out there that have the intimate knowledge of WA, and its various regions, that Rob does.
Rob's Pemberton Chardonnay is a wonderfully full expression of a grape that thrives in WA. Through barrel-fermentation with plenty of new oak, and nearly full malolactic ferment, this wine is buttery and oaky, but beautifully balanced by the cooler-climate, Pemberton fruit. What you end up with is a wine that is balanced and complex, showing both primary fruit expression as well as secondary oaky/buttery/leesy tones - and 94 Points from Jane Faulkner. A great match for poultry or light pork dishes. A must for fans of bolder Chardonnay.
After being transported to the winery the grapes were placed in a cool room overnight to chill the fruit further prior to whole bunch pressing the following morning. The juice had flavours of nectarine, melon and mineral acidity. I sent the unsettled juice direct to barrel with the barrels 50% new and 50% second use. Indigenous yeast was allowed to initiate primary fermentation followed by malo-lactic fermentation in most barrels. After minimal handing and 11 months in oak, the wine was bottled in February 2016.
A savoury nose of struck match and gun flint, coupled with a nutty, nougat oakiness. This is a big, bold Chardonnay, with a creamy/buttery palate, finishing with honeyed nut notes and lashings of vanillin oak.
