  • THE BRIEF
  • Nestled in the mountains of northeastern Victoria, just outside the picturesque town of Beechworth, lies the Savaterre vineyard.

The site was "discovered" in 1996 by Keppell Smith, owner and winemaker, after an expansive search through Australia's quality wine regions. The mild summer days, cool climate elevation combined with the rolling foothills of the Victorian Alps was the magic "terroir" combination sought by Keppell.

Intensely focused on the creation of outstanding, individualistic wines far removed from the mainstream , Keppell looks more to the wines, winemaking and viticulture of the Old World as his inspiration. Ranging from vineyard aspect through to the use of natural yeasts and French barriques, he combines the art and the science of winemaking in his drive to produce the finest of wines.

The Frere Cadet (younger brother) releases are less expensive artisan alternative to mass-produced industrial wines. To be enjoyed more regularly than the more complex Savaterre “Estate” wines.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Frére Cadet is made with the same traditional winemaking as its big brother. Organic viticulture, wild yeast fermentation, no added yeasts or bacteria. It is aged for 18 months in the very best French barrels we import.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

When you first smell this wine you cannot escape the exotic lifted perfume. Aromas of dark morello cherry, rose petals, brambles, allspice, clove and nutmeg. A compliment of fine oak is lurking in the background and manifests itself as a subtle cedary, cigar box aroma. The flavours accurately reflect the aromas. All held together with a, for want of a better word, juiciness. It refreshes your taste buds during a meal without interfering with the main course!

It has a growing wine presence and has recently been recognised as an independent wine region.

  • MIKE BENNIE - THE WINE FRONT

Sweet cherry, peppery spice, earthiness and a whiff of slate or granite mineral stuff. Very savoury. Very. Earthiness through the palate, graphite tannins and dark cherry, turned earth, truffle, mushroom, black olive. Serious feeling thing here with a lot of ‘rustic charm’ – you’ll have to be into that.
