The 2014-2015 growing season began with good early winter rains followed by a dry late winter and spring. Spring was warmer than average resulting early budburst and flowering. Summer days were mild with no extended heat waves resulting in even ripening. Yields were below average, but produced exceptional quality. 2015 Eden Valley Shiraz is truly sensational with near perfect growing conditions resulting in sensational wines. The 2015 vintage Barossa Valley Shiraz displays both richness and depth, underpinned by dark lingering tannins To qualify for Old Block, vineyards must be planted on their own rootstock and be older than 40 years old. The youngest vineyard used in the 2015 Old Block Shiraz was planted in 1963, whilst the oldest planting was 1870. Once the vineyard has qualified to be considered Old Block; it is graded in a blind tasting by the winemaking team to determine if it meets the quality standard. The parcels from Eden and Barossa Valley are then carefully blended by our winemakers to create a balanced and age worthy wine. If cellared carefully, this wine will age gracefully over the next 30 years.
2015 Old Block is beautifully balanced and elegant. It opens with a fine fruit burst followed by a dense dark fruit core and a long even finish. The tannins are fine and folding into layer after layer of flavour. It is an elegant wine with great complexity will further unfold over time.
Established in 1944, St Hallett wines have been producing Barossa Valley wines from a range of vineyard sites across the wine growing region. The winemaking team comprises of the equally passionate duo of Toby Barlow and senior winemaker Stuart Blackwell. St Hallett wines is located in Tanunda in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. The cellar door looks out over the Barossa Ranges and part of the vineyards selected for St Hallett winemaking. St Hallett uses up to 700 hectares of vines to produce the broad offering from the winemaking team. While old vine Shiraz is king, the range does flesh out with a white and red blend (Poacher’s and Gamekeepers), a Semillon and an Eden Valley Riesling. A Grenache Shiraz Touriga Nacional wine is also produced. The flagship wines are cellar worthy and show great complexity and intensity. The winery pursues a philosophy of ‘melding evolution and innovation’ seeking the best expressions of Barossa Valley fruit with an understanding of the climates and terroirs the vineyard sites occupy. Old vine, particularly Shiraz, production is revered with an emphasis on texture and integrity of flavour.
Serious old-vine character here with plum, light prune, wet-earth and tile character. Full body, chewy yet polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Juicy and delicious. Drink now or hold. Screw cap.
