'The combination of 20% whole bunch fermentation and new barriques has imprinted the winemakers' thumbprints firmly on the wine, taking it in a different direction to all of its siblings. Vive la difference, for there is the depth of fruit to respond well to the vinification.'
95 Points - James Halliday

  • The Windmill Vineyard Pinot Noir is without doubt the wine we spend the most time on when selecting barrels and blends. With the two different fermentation approaches (whole bunch and de-stemmed), as well as keeping separate different sections of the vineyard (2.5ha), there are always a lot of different blending options to consider. In 2015, we decided to include only 9% of the whole bunch component.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Hand-picked on March 31, the crop was particularly small at only 2.51 tonnes/ha. Each component was fermented and matured separately in French oak puncheons and barriques (45% new) for 5 months, prior to blending and a further 4 months maturation in puncheons only (33% new). The wine was bottled without filtration in February, 2016.

    TASTING NOTES

As a young wine, the palate is lifted but remains focused with a firm, centred density. Enjoy an abundance of bright red fruits, with nicely weighted tannins and earthy undertones, which will no doubt build over time.

  • REVIEWS

'Fermented in five French barriques (20% new), one barrique with 100% whole bunches, matured for 7 months, blended and matured for a further 2 months. The combination of 20% whole bunch fermentation and new barriques has imprinted the winemakers' thumbprints firmly on the wine, taking it in a different direction to all of its siblings. Vive la difference, for there is the depth of fruit to respond well to the vinification.'

'The Windmill Vineyard is at Merricks on the Mornington Peninsula. It was planted in 1996 and is north-facing. It’s an appealing pinot noir and there’s no question that it proves enjoyment. I took this from the tasting bench to the dinner table and it did the trick nicely. It tastes of strawberry, chicory, wood spice and red cherries, and carries a creamy sheen of oak too. It’s polished, accomplished and sound. There’s a teensy bit of warmth and the finish is satisfying but not emphatic.'
