  • "The back story of our ‘Old Vines’ Cabernet Shiraz blends starts in the late 1950s under my father Eric’s tutelage, with intermittent vintage releases of what were believed to be the first such solely ‘Estate grown’ styles in the country.

I then resurrected the blend for Tahbilk with four vintages in the 1970s and then, in what was shaping up to become a family tradition, my son Alister followed with two releases in the ‘80s. We have now made an ongoing commitment to this quintessential Australian blend, drawing on fruit from our wealth of older vineyard plantings."

John Purbrick - 3rd Generation Tahbilk Winemaker

The winemaking team have blended 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Shiraz from the Estate’s extensive old vine plantings to deliver a generous and expressive wine.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

With the underlying elegance that epitomises Tahbilk reds of this vintage; hints of bay leaf, mint and pepper weave seamlessly around dark berry, spice and plum fruits with herbal and cedar notes from time spent in a mix of French and American oak adding to its overall complexity.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • The name Tahbilk comes from the language of the Daung-wurrung clans, the first people in the area. They called it tabilk-tabilk which means place of many waterholes. Tahbilk Wines was established in 1860 in the Nagambie lakes sub region of Victoria’s Goulburn Valley. It is home to a unique meso-climate, influenced by inland lakes and lagoons fed from the Goulburn River. Purchased by the Purbrick family in 1925, Tahbilk is home to 5 generations. Tahbilk is home to 200 hectares of vine, including the traditional Rhone Valley varietals Marsanne, Viognier, Roussanne, Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre. Classic varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdelho are also present. Tahbilk's flagship 1860 Vines Shiraz is produced from the estate’s original 1/2 ha of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines that are amongst the oldest in the world.

    HUON HOOKE

Deep, dense red/purple hue with a bold, super-ripe blackberry, violet and subtle eucalypt-mint aroma, the palate full-bodied and rich, firm and solidly structured. The tannins are abundant and rule the palate. A massive wine, loaded with tannin, with richness and concentration to match, and evidently built to last. Big, bold, long term, and very high quality

NED GOODWIN - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Reminiscent of the wines I enjoyed in my early 20's. It is nice to still enjoy them! After all, everything moves in circles and this is viscerally Australian. Blue, red and black fruit allusions all, with tar, anise and a whiff of Aussie scrub billowing across the wine's stern. Cabernet's stern genetics and its authoritative chalky tannins placate the avalanche of fruit. This will age very well.
