TarraWarra Estate is best known for exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, alongside other single-block heritage varietals and estate blends. Their wines express the unique terroir of the TarraWarra Estate site, which is comprised of 28 individual blocks and planted with carefully selected clones, each of which contributes distinctive characteristics to the wines. Under the watchful eye of winemaker Clare Halloran, all of TarraWarra Estate’s wines are meticulously grown, handpicked, vinified and aged on the estate.
2015 was a lovely year in the Yarra Valley cool nights during ripening allowed for retention of acid and fine flavor development. Yields were 7 tonnes per hectare. The block ripens over later than other blocks due to the southerly aspect of this site.
South Block was planted to 100% Mendoza clone Chardonnay on our only southern facing site in 2002. Mendoza is a clone noted for its low phenolics, higher acidity, and hen and chicken bunch structure. Vine material was sourced from Leeuwin Estate, in WA it is the predominant Chardonnay clone.
Racked directly to barrel after whole-bunch pressing, this wine is another expression of TarraWarra Chardonnay. Made without yeast or acid addition, the wine is matured in French oak for 10 months. It is crossflow filtered without fining before bottling at the Estate.
This Chardonnay is quite a departure from our usual Chardonnay. The perfumed aroma of citrus fruits with a hint of oak flows through the very fine and long palate, with higher acidity and a singular linearity to the palate.
TarraWarra Estate was established in 1983 by Marc and Eva Besen with a vision to producing wines of great quality and integrity amidst a welcoming and beautiful location. TarraWarra Estate is located on a prime site at the warm eastern end of the Yarra Valley in southern Victoria. It is recognised as one of Australia’s great wine estates. Chief winemaker, Clare Halloran leads a team at TarraWarra Estate that pays particular attention to the characteristics of each new vintage. The remarkable qualities of every individual vineyard block are preserved by fermentation and vinification of many different parcels of fruit. As a result, TarraWarra wines offer a unique reflection of seasonal conditions in the vineyard. TarraWarra Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have received consistent acclaim and numerous awards. They are premium wines of great character and depth, crafted with elegant structure and balance. They reflect the outstanding quality of 100% estate grown fruit from the unique microclimate of a specially selected site.
NED GOODWIN - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION
This is initially an austere wine built around a stony mineral carapace, some mealy lees and staunch vanillin oak supports. Allusions of stone fruit are redolent, transpiring into a creamy custard core with a note of sour apricot pith edging across its seams. Tightly coiled, this grows in stature with air. Nevertheless, the Yarra's genetic voice seems constrained in the name of reticence.
