Vasse Felix was the first vineyard and winery to be established in Western Australia’s Margaret River region. Established in 1967 by Dr Tom Cullity, it is situated in the Willyabrup sub region where ancient soils and cooling Southern and Indian Ocean breezes provide ideal conditions for fine wine production. Vasse Felix is owned and operated by the Holmes a Court family. The Vasse Felix winemaking team shares a common goal in crafting wines of exceptional quality from unique vineyard sites. Under the direction of Chief Winemaker Virginia Willcock, the objective remains the same today as it did 40 years ago. A precise understanding of local viticulture and environment is coupled with a hands on winemaking approach. The Vasse Felix style shows concentration and complexity while retaining signature elegance and finesse. It is a testament to winemaking and viticultural dedication and attention to detail throughout the year. The revered Vasse Felix Heytesbury wines are produced in limited quantities from a barrel selection of the finest fruit parcels each vintage. Vasse Felix continues to be one of the most highly awarded and visited wineries in Australia.
The 2015 Cullity is all about finesse and power with subtle aromas and flavors of currants, plums and autumnal leaves. Full body and firm, chewy tannins that give the wine length and freshness. Just keeps on growing on the palate. Better after 2022, but already a gem to taste. Drink in 2022 and onwards. Screw cap.
JOE CZERWINSKI - WINE ADVOCATE
A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec boasts stunningly pure cassis aromas, with just enough hints of mint, sage, cedar and tobacco to impart welcome complexity. It's medium to full-bodied but linear and focused in style, with more length than breadth on the palate, layers of fine, mouth-coating tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. While by no means unapproachable even now, expect it to be better in another five years and drink well for another decade or more after that.
NED GOODWIN - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION
A noble blend of 78% cabernet, 20% malbec and a dollop of petit verdot, conferring ample richness and an authoritative spine: saline maritime acidity and detailed grape tannins, moreish and ripe, attesting to an extraction regime of courage and confidence. Together with extended maturation in French barrique (18 months, 50% new), the structural attributes are impressive. While this full-bodied wine demands patience, one can already detect cassis, lead, cedar, graphite, a herbal potpourri, a swab of black olive and a bay leaf linger, across cedar oak beams.
DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS 2019 - SILVER
Ripe blackberry and delicate, earthy tobacco aromas. Complex, with savoury forest floor notes balancing the fruit concentration, then a long and expressive finish.
HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW
Medium to full red colour with a tint of purple. The bouquet is earthy and leafy, with some stemmy malbec and herbal and blueberry cabernet aromas. The palate is taut and firm, elegant if slightly pinched and seems a bit lean, with a firm tannin after-grip. It seems a touch straightforward, considering the price, but will undoubtedly reward cellaring and build more complexity as it matures.
