  • THE BRIEF
  • The Cuilleron family domaine is located in the hamlet of Verlieu, part of the town of Chavanay. As of 2012, the domaine is comprised of 52 hectares of vineyards, covering multiple appellations including, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph Rouge and Blanc, Cote Rotie, and Saint-Peray. Les Serines is sourced from the oldest Syrah vines of the domaine, grown in shallow granitic soils.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • High density planting in shallow, granitic soils. No insecticides or pesticides are used in the vineyard, and only a small amount of organic fertiliser is used, with respect to the soil and vine balance. Leaf-thinning and green-harvesting are employed to promote grape maturation. The grapes are handpicked then sorted, crushed and partially destemmed. Fermentation takes place in open, temperature-controlled vats for about 3 weeks, with regular cap-punching and pumping over. The wine is then transferred to barriques for malolactic fermentation and maturation for 18 months. Bottled unfiltered.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

An intensely complex nose of dark fruit enhanced by spice and liquorice. Brighter fruit upfront, then evolving into something rich, dense and rounded on the palate, with a long, mineral finish supported by silky, fine-grained tannins.

    JOSH RAYNOLDS - VINOUS

Inky ruby. A heady, highly complex bouquet evokes dark fruit liqueur, incense and floral pastille qualities, along with notes of smoked meat and star anise. Sweet and deeply concentrated yet lively, offering sappy, spice-tinged cassis and boysenberry flavors that gain energy with air. Velvety tannins frame the sappy fruit on an extremely long, smoky finish.'

    JAMES SUCKLING

A bolder and more assertive St Joseph from Cuilleron with more oak-derived, exotic and fragrant spices as well as dark chocolate and rich dark plum fruits. The palate has plush, flavor-drenched tannins that deliver a succulently appealing wine.'
