  • THE BRIEF
  • With over 8 million bottles sold every year, the Baron de Lestac, from esteemed French wine negociant Castel, ranks as the number one selling Bordeaux of France (and therefore, most likely the world).

While we would never espouse quantity over quality, this is most certainly a wine that over-delivers on the value front. Available for the first time in Australia, this well structured Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot is expressive and fragrant. It has a glorious signature of red fruits, spiced notes and surprisingly good length. The word value is writ large upon its traditionally minded label and for the money, it really is hard to go past.

Given the pedigree of the Bordeaux vintage in 2016, the wine has also notched up some impressive bling already: a Gold Medal from French wine critics Gilbert & Gaillard's International Challenge, a Bronze Medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards 2018, and another Bronze from the IWSC.

Not bad for a cheeky Claret that has travelled all the way from Bordeaux, picked up a few medals along the way, and can all be had for under $15 a bottle.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Baron de Lestac red is matured in oak barrels for several months. Optimized with each vintage, it develops a subtlety, an elegance and a tannic structure rarely encountered in this AOC Bordeaux.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

The color is garnet with deep brick highlights. The nose is fine and has aromas of red fruits with woody oak notes. On the palate, the wine is well structured with fine-grained tannins. A touch of oak lingers on the fine finish.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Vine growers, wine producers, barrel-makers, cellar master, winemaker, quality manager… A network of professionals put their skills, passion and high standards to bring you Baron de Lestac – a Bordeaux brand with a unique personality, a rich history and unrivalled flavour. Bordeaux is one of the famous wine-producing regions, with a mosaic of soils (gravel, sand, limestone and clay) and different levels of sun exposure, of gentle slopes, alluvial plains and hilltops, that help to create the Bordeaux and Baron de Lestac diversity and typicity. Baron de Lestac red is aged in oak barrels for at least 6 months to refine the wine and obtain the best balance between the fruitiness of the Merlot and the softness of the vanilla flavour from the oak.
