2016 Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru En Caillerets

2016 Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru En Caillerets

DESCRIPTION
48 bottles. Leroux could hardly conceal his excitement when he told us about his newest Volnay contract, and that excitement is certainly borne out by the wine itself. Bordering 1er Cru Les Santenots to the south, and En Champans to the north, this beautifully exposed vineyard sits mid-slope and is exploited by growers such as d’Angerville, Lafarge and Pousse d’Or. The 14-odd hectares of Caillerets are subdivided into three lieux-dits, with Leroux now farming 0.5 hectares of Pinot Fin (planted in 1945, 1985 and the late ‘90s) in the area known as Cailleret Dessus. Crafted with 75% whole bunches – only the fruit from the youngest vines were destemmed – and the wine was aged in roughly 20% new oak. The only negative point about this wine is the little quantity that was produced!

REVIEWS
'Full, dark red. Aromas of redcurrant and cherry complicated by a hint of oak spice. Concentrated, lightly saline wine with a subtle sweetness to its perfumed flavors of ripe red fruits and flowers. With good depth and a firm tannic spine, this wine is built to age. Finishes with surprising sweetness.'
91-93 Points - Stephen Tanzer

'The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, including two-thirds whole bunch, has a nicely detailed bouquet with bright black cherry and blackcurrant scents, very pure and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red and black fruit, hints of fig in the background with a vivacious, blood orange-tinged finish that lingers long in the mouth. Excellent.'
90-92 Points - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
