Barossa Valley

Our Price: $23.99 / bottle (RRP: $28.00 ) Case: 6 x 750ml

'The medium-bodied palate is a first-up triumph, with a finely woven texture carrying red and black cherries, pepper, spice and herb that would more often come from cool climates.'
96 Points - James Halliday

  • Brave Souls is the creation of young winemaker Julia Weirich, in collaboration with Simon Cowham and Corey Ryan of Sons of Eden. The name is inspired by the story of the famous Admella shipwreck of 1859 and spotlights the remarkable accounts of those characters who risked their lives to help the survivors.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Sourced from two different vineyards, located in Western Ridge and Light Pass of the Barossa Valley, different soils, aspects and microclimates contribute to this fully flavoured, aromatic yet structured wine. The average vine age is approx. 20 years. After a tough growing season, the vines developed modest but well balanced canopies with below average yields. Upon veraison an extended period of milder conditions prevailed, together with timely rainfall, ensuring a slow ripening process. As a result excellent flavour and tannin ripeness was achieved.

Fruit was fully destemmed and chilled within the fermenter to ensure an extended fermentation period. Extended skin contact ranging from 12 to 20 days with gentle extraction of tannins from a combination of pump overs and manual plunging. Natural and cultured yeast were used. For malo and elevage a mixture of old and new oak was used. Wine spent 18 months in barrel.

The diversity of fermentation techniques, together with the vineyard selection, assisted in building complexity and layers of flavour within the blended wine.

    TASTING NOTES

Deep crimson in colour, the wine shows vibrant and lifted wild berry aromas with complex black pepper and briary herbal nuances on the nose. On the palate generous and fleshy ripe red berry fruits are layered with subtle herbal notes, enveloped with enduring velvety tannins.

  • REVIEWS

'From two vineyards, one on the Western Ridge, the other at Light Pass; destemmed and chilled before a 10-20-day fermentation with gentle extraction, 18 months in new and used oak. It has a bright, full crimson hue, and the bouquet speaks of fresh, dark berry fruits. The medium-bodied palate is a first-up triumph, with a finely woven texture carrying red and black cherries, pepper, spice and herb that would more often come from cool climates.'

'Barossa Shiraz. Average vine age is about 20 years. It went into both old and new oak but whether this was American or French oak isn’t specified; presumably it was therefore American. It’s a dry, powerful red wine, intensely clovey, blackberried where it needs to be, infused with graphite and gravel, and littered throughout with gum leaf and a smooth, cream-resin character. The fruit is ripe and sweet but the wine still manages to exude dryness and firmness. Any interesting wine, without doubt. Lots going on. More peppercorn than pepper but there’s certainly a lot more going on here than simple fruit.'
93+ Points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

'Very deep, dark red/purple colour with a sweetly floral, slightly jammy fragrance. The wine is full-bodied and strong, with lots of muscle. It's just a trifle astringent at this tender stage. It has potential and will benefit from cellaring.'
