What started as a corporate winemaker rebelling against the machine, has evolved and changed over the past 9 years. From its birth in McLaren Vale as Glenn James exploration of skin-contact amphora wine, the Clay Pot Wine project and moved, and evolved into something much more focused and broad. in partnership with his wife Jo Marsh, Glenn now produces a range of Amphora vinified wines, with no additions, bar so2. Not orange, or 'natural' wines, rather and exploration of pared-back, extended skin-contact wines, not hemmed in by an preconceptions of what these wines need to be.
JANE FAULKNER - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION
The inaugural release, a 100% friulano sourced from Peter Taurian's vineyard in the Tamar Valley. Wild yeast, 200 days on skins sealed in a clay amphora, basket pressed with a small amount of SO2 to preserve the wine with another 6 months on lees to settle then racked and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Glenn James is a master winemaker and is aiming for texture and freshness. That's achieved and more. Complex flavours of poached quince, fennel seeds, savoury and neat phenolics. For the record, he is making a skin-contact white, not an orange wine, a philosophical difference for another day.
