  • Craggy Range produces a collection of iconic wines from multiple regions in New Zealand. Owner Terry Peabody and his family pursued the single vineyard approach to winemaking, planting on green fields and bare land ensuring a focus on quality from the very beginning.

A refined and elegant hand-crafted Merlot dominant blend that represents both the vigneron’s art and inherent understanding of the land, ensuring ‘Sophia’ is the finest expression of the terroir and the people. The best parcels of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot Bordeaux varietals are selected from the Gimblett Gravels vineyard and blended to make the richly layered and precisely constructed ‘Sophia’. The grapes are blended to produce a wine that is a unique canvas of its place.

Vintage: Cool spring and early summer, warm and dry finish. Excellent.

58% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon. 100% destemmed then into closed top French oak cuves for fermentation. Maturation in French oak barriques, 45% new.

Deep darkest red. Aromatically complex with notes of ripe dark plum, violets, an autumnal forest and a touch of smoke. The wine exhibits great focus and intensity with fine tannins layered through a core of dark fruit. The wine carries a real seriousness that underlies its youthful charm.

'Deep, quite youthful red/purple colour. The bouquet is spotlessly clean, fresh and bright, showing classy oak and properly ripe fruit. The wine is concentrated, full-bodied and powerful, with density, great structure and superbly ripe fruit flavours. A majestic wine. It's a baby, and all it needs is a bit more time.'

'Wow. This is polished and perfect. Blackberry, tobacco, black olive, mocha, pencil and dried herb. Medium to full-bodied, graphite/mineral thing here, with depth and density, an elegant succulence, ripe and supple tannin pushing through, a raspberry and floral mouth-perfume, length and precision. A stand out.'
96 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

'This is really seductive on the nose and already gives an impression of plushness with regal, violet-like florals, plums and mulberries in abundance and all nicely ripe. Additional notes of cedary oak and freshly tilled earth. The palate is full and fleshy and the tannins compose nicely as it builds. Cabernet takes the lead through the long, impressive finish. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc.'
    96 Points - James Suckling

'Full, dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, near impenetrable, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is somewhat restrained initially, with tightly bound aromas of dark-red and black plum fruit with hints of blackcurrant leaf and cassis, with lifted oak notes. This has lovely detail and the aromatics form an elegant core unfolding pencilly oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly proportioned with vibrantly sweet dark-red and black plum fruit along with subtle notes of blackcurrants and cassis. The fruit has piquancy and is enhanced by fresh, lacy acidity. The wine flows along a fine-textured and structured line leading to an elegant, poised finish. This is an elegantly presented Merlot-based wine with vibrant and piquant fruit flavours of dark plums and blackcurrants on a fine-textured palate with fresh mouthfeel.'
