DESCRIPTION
  • Originally established in the 1860s by one of Melbourne’s founding fathers, James Johnston, Craiglee Vineyard was absent from the Australian wine landscape until it was replanted in 1976 by an enthusiastic agricultural science graduate called Pat Carmody. Now one of Australia’s most highly regarded and awarded wineries, Craiglee is still run with the loving attention of Pat and Dianne Carmody with the occasional input of their sons.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Craiglee Chardonnay is recognisable for its simple elegance and its purity of flavour which respects the fruit we grow on our river flats. In the winery we ferment and nurture the wine in French oak barrels to maintain the characteristics of the grapes in the paddock We see aromas of stone fruits and passionfruit, creamy oak overtones and pleasing mouthfeel. Winemaker Pat Carmody modestly says: 'I don't think there's any secret to my Chardonnay. They're relatively simply made wines. I pick 'em a bit riper than is fashionable. I don't let them go through malo, I don't lees stir much and they spend about 10 months in oak, around 20 per cent new.'

    TASTING NOTES

This has creamy yeasty lees, cashew nut and white peach aromas, while the palate is rich and complex with good balance, length and slight grip.

  • REVIEWS

'Light to mid-yellow colour with a rich, ripe, complex bouquet delivering rich, medium to full-bodied, complex chardonnay flavour of generosity and great length as well as balance and finesse. A big finish with plenty of oak. A glorious wine which delivers the body and flavour you'd expect of a chardonnay.'
