'It combines heft with restraint and that's its key... This is a hearty red wine to sit down and settle in with.'

  • Dandelion Vineyards is a unique fusion of vineyards and vignerons. Their wines represent decades of experience, blending the fruit of old vine gardens with the finest traditions of artisan winemaking. Dandelion Vineyards are proven plantings that have stood the test of time. Capturing variety, vintage and vineyard requires an enlightened approach and Dandelion's aim is to nurture the unique character of these vineyards and express their terroir in the wines.

Our Lioness of McLaren Vale is sourced from the foothills of McLaren Vale. Here mature Shiraz vines ‘populate or perish’ in the ironstone pebble laden clay loam, over ancient Kurrajong Formation geology, a silica cemented conglomerate most suited to grow Shiraz. After hand picking whole bunches of our Lioness of McLaren Vale in mid-March our winemaker Elena Brooks let the whole bunches ferment together in open top fermenters with ambient yeasts and hand plunging for 12 days, before basket pressing into some new but predominately older French Oak barriques, to the mature for a further 18 months in the same oak, before bottling without fining or filtration to capture the essence of the vineyard.

Deep purple with hints of violet on the edges, indicating youth. Impressive purity of fruit showing lush scents of summer pudding with lifted red fruits, berries and a hit of cinnamon. Black cherries, Damson plums, mulberries and milk chocolate undertones. Generous mouth filling sweet blackberry, raspberry and plums cover the palate with lashings of sweet spice.

'It combines heft with restraint and that's its key. Black coal, redcurrant, blackberry and clove flavours announce the presence of a big wine, but from there it just keeps the flow going, the party on track. No fireworks, no overreaching, no embarrassing leaps into the pool, and all the better for it. This is a hearty red wine to sit down and settle in with.'
