2016 Deep Woods Estate Reserve Chardonnay

2016 Deep Woods Estate Reserve Chardonnay

Five gold medals in the second half of '17 will have been added to by the time of publication. Mainly sourced from Wilyabrup, the wine has a special type of phenolic grip (not limited to white wines) that makes the taster incapable of doing anything other than swallow it (bad phenolics have the opposite effect). A special wine, with perfect fruit/oak balance.

  • Arguably one of Australia's great Chardonnays. This vintage sees James Halliday Winemaker of the Year Julian Langworthy experiment a little more, with a touch more solids work and the requisite twist of sulphides.

The Reserve program at Deep Woods has grown in stature with each passing year, and across the expansion of the business and the Fogarty group, the Chardonnay barrels that are used in the final cut are ratcheting up in quality at an exorbitant rate. Langworthy has instilled a fastidious program, ensuring the best, most purest expression of Chardonnay is utilised in the final Reserve blend.

The 2016 is still classic, archetypal Chardonnay, with the latent Deep Woods power, however it's done with a little more winemaking nuance taking hold. Cashew, peach, melon, lemon balm, grapefruit, cut hay and cream, with a whiff of flint and smoke. As always, this is a mythical wine, and can count itself as one of the shining beacons of the Margaret River, of Australian wine and Chardonnay in general.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

The 2016 vintage in Margaret River yielded elegant wines with pristine natural acidity and archetypal varietal purity. A steady harvest allowed considered picking decisions leading to wines of considerable finesse but with unmistakable Margaret River power. This wine is an assemblage of two central Wilyabrup vineyards with a small amount of fruit from the Karridale area. The fruit was hand-picked and then chilled to maintain pristine condition. A minimalist approach in the winery included whole-bunch pressing, wild fermentation and sparing lees stirring in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak. The individual parcels were kept separate and aged on lees for 9 months until the final wine was blended for bottling.

The 2016 Reserve Chardonnay is only the fifth vintage of what the Deep Woods winemaking team see as the ‘rebirth’ of this wine, and has become one of the most sought after wines from Deep Woods Estate. Despite huge acclaim for previous vintages, the Chief Winemaker firmly believes that this is the best vintage to date.

    TASTING NOTES

Mid-light straw with tinges of green. Notes of fresh stone fruit and citrus blossom combine with warm straw, cedar spice and chipped oyster shell aromas. This wine displays a pure and elegant palate of stone fruit, lime zest and blossom. A fine acid backbone combines with juicy phenolic structure to produce a wine of depth, power, and complexity.

'Continues the evolution of Deep Woods to premier chardonnay producer in Margaret River. This is high-class stuff that gets the whole kid gloves treatment from winemaker Julian Langworthy. Whole bunch pressing after hand-picking, a mix of new and used French oak and lees stirring. It all creates texture and layered complexity. Such an elegant and persuasive chardonnay that captures the new expression of the region.'
